Fundraisers dress up BBSR
Yes, what you have heard is true - you have a small but distinct window of opportunity to buy an Armani suit for about $40 in Bermuda.
For two days only (tomorrow and Saturday) the meaning of "BBSR" will change from "Bermuda Biological Station for Research" to "Bermuda's Boutique Stylish Resale" as the sale of a lifetime takes place at No. 6 Shed in Hamilton.
The sale of nearly new designer and internationally labelled clothes and accessories is being organised by a group of supporters of the BBSR.
"We have all been supporters of the Biological Station for some time," said Ellie Naess, the group's founder.
"However with this centennial year we wanted to find our own unique way of contributing to this milestone. Most of us are from an artistic background rather than a scientific one, and we were delighted that once we'd hit on the idea, it was met with resounding approval from the BBSR board. Wright Hall is a remarkable building. It was originally built in 1907 as a sanatorium before becoming the Shore Hills Golf & Country Club.
"In 1931 it became home to BBSR and it's not surprising that since that time, the laboratories, research vessels and scientific equipment have been the priority for funding over and above the accommodation of 41 bedrooms and apartments which now provide us with this challenge."
The group decided that this year - the institution's 100th year - was the perfect opportunity to redecorate the interior of the 97-year old Wright Hall building, and the designer sale will raise vital funds to launch that project.
With accommodation for 100 people, BBSR is not only the largest property in the East End, it is also the largest employer. And at present the institution also has to accommodate the conferences, educational and scientific groups it attracts from overseas.
"In the last five years we have accommodated over ten thousand people," said Lauren Yelle-Simons, operations manager at BBSR.
"Having the accommodation upgraded will certainly help us attract new groups here which in turn will benefit the Island and St. George's in particular."
The sale will last from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on both days at No. 6 Shed.
