Gina lays on a treat for young thespians
Summertime means Bermuda's young people are out of school, which suits Gina Spence Productions in Christ perfectly, for it is gearing up to present its annual theatrical treat in August.
With the script written, and the production team in place, producer Ms Spence is now appealing for cast members.
So, if you are aged seven or up, and enjoy being involved in theatre, now's your chance to shine. However, spaces are limited, thanks to an overwhelming turn-out for last weekend's sign-up. This year's production is entitled `Reality Check,' and has as its foundation Psalm 46 verse 10: `Be still and know that I am God.' Written by Ms Spence, it is based around two characters, Deception and Reality Check, who will take the audience through a variety of experiences, and particularly topical issues, and challenge their thinking.
For example, `Chit Chat,' which is based on David Lopes' talk show, will address the topics education, politics and crime, while `Judgment Day' will deal with our perceptions of who is and is not eligible to pass through the Pearly Gates.
"We have developed five different characters who will stand before God and have their lives played back to them," Ms Spence said. "It is very serious and yet a comedy. We take different personalities in and out of church and deal with the way God sees them, and how they see themselves. There are some surprises as to who gets in and who doesn't."
Ms Spence says there will be "lots of dancing - liturgical, African and modern", much of it choreographed by middle school students, who will be assisted by an experienced choreographer.
"I am really excited about that," Ms Spence says. "I saw the groups perform at their schools and at Spring into the Arts, and when I approached them they were delighted to participate."
I think it is a great opportunity for them to use their talents."
In fact, the producer says that one of the goals of the road show is to let young people utilise their talents with the assistance of professionals.
"Many of them are studying performing arts abroad so this gives them an opportunity to use what they are learning," she said. "We also have some junior writers who have written two songs which are very interesting." Try-outs for the production are being held at the Bermuda Broadcasting Company studios this coming Saturday, and Ms Spence says she is looking for "people to do choreography, sing and act."
Noting that Gina Spence Productions in Christ (GSPC) caters to wholesome family entertainment, she asks that all participants be "committed, and respect that we are Christian-based".
"But you don't have to be saved to be part of the show," she says.
The purpose of the annual summer show is two-fold: an opportunity for young people in a forum to get involved, and an opportunity to introduce them to the word of God without forcing it on them. The cast will run between 60 and 90 people, and try-out times are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A representative of GSPC will be at the entrance of the Bermuda Broadcasting Company to direct applicants. For further information telephone Ms Spence at 292-3945 or 298-7483.
Reality Check will be performed at City Hall in August.
