The Cemeteries in St. George's

In the 1850s space behind the mansion 'Rose Hill' in St. George's was bought to use as a graveyard. The site has been known ever since as 'Cemetery Hill'.

The grounds of St. Peter's Church were becoming seriously overcrowded.

The whole cemetery was razed during the 19th century by building new graves on top of the existing ones.

Problems worsened as fever epidemics in the early 19th century led to a huge increase in the death rate in St. George's ? especially among the troops garrisoned in the Town and the surrounding forts.

Building a new cemetery meant that the practice of adding new tiers of graves above the ancient ones, largely came to a halt.

Featherbed Alley

Featherbed Alley in St. George's, is named after the goose-down mattress, a luxury household item that was owned only by the wealthiest of Townspeople during the years of Bermuda's history.

Featherbed Alley reputedly gained its name from a domestic dispute that occurred there.

It happened one evening, when a wife threw her husband out of the house .

Whether he was just trying to be practical, or whether the aim was to embarrass his wife into changing her mind, no one knows?but he allegedly dragged his featherbed out into the street and slept the night there!

Little did he realise that his actions would be remembered for centuries to come.
