Join the Daughters of the American Revolution
Female descendants of American Revolutionaries can join the Daughters of the American Revolution in Bermuda after a local chapter was formed last week.
The new chapter has been named the Somers Isle Chapter, after Sir George Somers.
Membership is open to women 18 years of age and older, who can prove a blood lineal line descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American Independence.
The applicant must be interested in participating in the historical, educational, and patriotic activities of the chapter and applicants must be live on the Island. The society accepts as service the period between April 19 , 1775 (Battle of Lexington) and the November 26,1783 (the withdrawal of British troops from New York).The society has 2,900 chapters in the United States and around the world. The organisation was founded in 1890. The Bermuda chapter consists of eight charter members: regent, Rawles Kelly, vice-regent, Lisa Whitehead, recording secretary, Sandra Brooks, registrar, Amy Turnbull, librarian, Sara Wright, treasurer, Mary Elizabeth Price, chaplain, Susan Outerbridge and Victoria H. Pacaud.
In addition to the above members, the chapter also has five prospective charter members; Kim Paterson, Sara Westhead, Joan Powell, Barbara Hagood and Cindy Williams.
Gail M. Parzyck, of the United States, and a member of the National Society of Daughters of American Revolution Overseas Units Genealogy Team, and the Registrar of the Melzingah Chapter NSDAR, Beacon, NY, USA, organised the chapter.
Mrs. Parzyck is also the liaison between the NSDAR and the newly established "Somers Isle" Chapter. She has roots in Bermuda and still has relatives living on the Island.
