Love isn?t an accounting ledger
Brom Bones rounds the corner of the village square holding a beautiful bouquet of wild flowers, but he stops short when he spies Ichabod carrying a small gift.
Both men immediately hide their offerings for Katrina in their coats. Warily, they size each other up, neither wanting to give away his amorous intention.
?Don?t kid yourself, stranger?and do not think that my Katrina will be taken in by your false charms for very long! She will soon see in you what I see in you!? proclaims Brom.
?And what do you see?? Ichabod demands.
?I see a cad, a scoundrel, a merchant of broken hearts. Men like you do not earn love Ichabod ? you steal it with false promises.?
?And I?ll remind you, horse trader, one cannot steal what is given willingly.?
Suddenly, both men turn and run for Katrina?s door! Ichabod reaches the door first with Brom in hot pursuit. They both knock excitedly. Katrina answers the door, surprised.
?You?re both here ? at the same time??
?I?ve come to invite you to the Oktoberfest party my dear,? exclaims Ichabod.
?Me too!? blurts out Brom.
?But I was here first,? insists Ichabod.
?Was not!? replies Brom.
?Was too!? snaps Ichabod.
?Not!? continues Brom.
?Was!? demands Ichabod.
?Prove it!? insists Brom.
?Make me!? replies Ichabod.
Katrina rolls her eyes as she watches the two grown men acting like schoolboys. Ichabod quickly pulls a locket from his coat. ?My love is endless Katrina: it knows no boundaries!? he proclaims.
Not to be outdone, Brom presents his flowers. ?My love is like the sea Katrina: restless and deep.?
Ichabod pulls a small portrait of himself out of his sleeve. ?My love is infinite!?
Brom desperately searches his pockets. He pulls out the only thing he has and offers it to Katrina ? it?s a rusty horseshoe. ?My love is ? eternal!? exclaims Brom.
?That?s an old horseshoe,? scoffs Ichabod.
Brom quickly tries to explain to Katrina, ?It?s ? a ?um?I just came from work.?
Finally, Katrina has had enough. ?Gentlemen, please. Stop this! Thank you for your kind offers, but I will be going to the party with my parents. Please, just leave me alone! I cannot choose!?
Stunned, both men can only watch as Katrina drops the gifts and goes back into the house.
?Now you?ve done it!? snaps Ichabod.
?I?ve done it, done it! Everything was perfect in Sleepy Hollow until you slithered in!? proclaims Brom.
Seeing the fury in Brom?s eyes, Ichabod quickly excuses himself. Left alone, Brom wonders how he can possibly compete with Ichabod?s education and manners; he is a simple man who only wants to marry the woman he loves.
Early the next morning, Baltus speaks with Katrina about her dilemma. ?But Katrina! ... You?re such a bright lass. Your choice should be so obvious by now! What are you waiting for??
?Love isn?t an accounting ledger. I can?t just tally up the assets and declare a winner. It must be felt ? in here!? Katrina touches her heart.
Katrina?s mother sighs ?We only want what is best for our precious daughter. And we believe Ichabod is the right man!?
With tears in her eyes, Katrina finally realises that the only way to make her parents happy is to tell them what they want to hear.
?Katrina?Crane? Oh well, what?s in a name??
Believing her tears are born of happiness, Baltus and Dame embrace Katrina, unaware that deep inside, her heart is breaking.
At sunset, Katrina sits beside a brook in the country thinking about her decision. Brom quietly walks up behind her and places a comforting hand on her shoulder. ?So?you?ve made your decision??
Katrina thoughtfully turns to Brom with tears in her eyes. ?I can?t do it Brom. I just can?t go against my father?s wishes.?
?Very well then, marry him. But never forget that I will be the one who truly loves you. And I will keep on loving you, night after night, and day after day.?
Later, Ichabod is at the schoolhouse preparing his lesson plans for tomorrow?s classes. He smiles to himself, knowing his plot to marry the richest girl in the county is working!
Suddenly, he is startled by a loud crack of thunder outside. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees a shadow move. And in the next flash of lightning, the towering shape of a headless figure looms on the wall! Ichabod spins! But it?s gone!
Ichabod trembles as a sudden gust of icy wind blows out the candle on his desk, leaving the Schoolmaster in complete darkness and complete silence?except for the sound of footsteps slowly approaching the schoolroom door?
