Bermuda's legendary trumpeter Ghandi Burgess is returning to the Fairmont Southampton Princess on June 29, but this time it won't be to his old job of musical director. Instead, he is to be the guest of honour at a concert organised by his family and friends both as a tribute to his long and stellar career and also as a benefit.

Regarded as one of Bermuda's greatest musicians, Mr. Burgess was for decades an icon on the local music scene, who was also much in demand. His years of headlining the entertainment programme at the Southampton Princess was regarded as a pinnacle of his highly successful career.

Although he retired professionally some years ago, the 77-year-old trumpeter continued to value his independent lifestyle, but now that has been compromised by deteriorating eyesight to such an extent that he will need assistance in order to maintain a better quality of life.

So the man who gave so generously of his talents to help fellow musicians and entertainers in similar concerts will now be a beneficiary himself, and as befits someone who always gave his best, the event will feature a galaxy of Bermudian stars who are also noted for doing the same.

Wendell (Shine) Hayward is putting together a big band for the occasion, and other participating artists will include Tony Bari, Gita Blakeney, Steve Dupres, Joe Wiley Trio, Deletta Gillespie, Brass Praise, Tempo, Toni Richardson, Dennis Fox & Friends, Griffin Jazz Band, Cedric Thomas, Joyce DeShields and the Apex 4. Emcee-in-chief will be Gene Steede, assisted by Clarke Burgess, Keevil (The Captain) Burgess, and popular comedian Bootsie.

'Salute to Musical Excellence' will be held in the Mid-Ocean Amphitheatre of the Southampton Princess, beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets ($60 general admission, groups of six or more $50 per person) are now on sale at True Reflections, the Music Box, Sound Stage, Music World and Nu-Look Barber Shop, as well as from committee and family members.
