Nicky?s dedication bears fruit
Nicky Gurret is travelling to the land of the rising sun with her box made of plant materials.
She is entering the 8th World Flower Show, entitled ?Harmony?, which is taking place in Yokohama, Japan, from Friday.
Her entry is entitled ?Treasure Chest?, and it had to be predominantly plant material and confined to a space 30cm x 30 cm with a green background.
?It is one of the few classes that can be prepared before hand,? said Mrs. Gurret, ?And is considered a craft class where one does not to have fresh plant material.?
She said the show will host more than 800 competitors from across the world.
?The World Flower Shows take place every three years,? she said.
?The last one took place in Scotland and the next one in 2008 will take place in Pakistan.?
Mrs. Gurret said she was tremendously grateful to The Bermuda Arts Council which has partly sponsored her to attend the World Flower Show.
?In the past I have exhibited in The Bermuda Annual Exhibition where I have twice won the local National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS) of Great Britain trophy for the exhibitor gaining the highest aggregate points,? she said.
?I have also exhibited twice in the NAFAS annual competition in the United Kingdom and in 2003 I won my class entitled ?On a wing? where I received a gold NAFAS spoon.
?And in 2002 I exhibited at the 7th World Association of Flower Arranging Show in Scotland.?
Next year she plans to compete in The Chelsea Flower Show, London.
?It is the world?s leading horticultural event,? she said.
?This year I have been invited to compete in the class entitled Glimpses of Paradise. The show has been held each May since 1913 and is run by the Royal Horticultural Society.
?It usually lasts for four days, however this year it has been extended to five days. One of the most popular segments of the show is the flower arranging and the show gardens.
?The Chelsea Flower Show receives a tremendous amount of spectators. Approximately 200,000 people will attend the show this year.?
