Obituary: Sigi H. Brauer: 1943-2001

Sigi Brauer, creator of Monarch Hotels, LLC and Brauer Management, LLC with offices in Boston, MA and Alton, NH, was killed in a car collision on Saturday, September 1 in Gilford, NH. He was 57.

One of the world's foremost international hoteliers, Mr. Brauer was a former general manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Boston, and a vice president and a founding officer of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, LLC of Atlanta, GA. His thirty years experience at the highest levels of hotel management included successfully operating twenty Ritz-Carlton Hotels in the US, Asia, Australia and Europe.

Among his colleagues, Mr. Brauer was known for his warmth and generosity, his leadership and uncompromising standards, his ability to "mastermind" and deliver outstanding results, and for his insight, courage, determination and flair.

Mr. Brauer started his career working in prestigious hotels throughout Europe before joining the Princess Hotel Company with properties in Bermuda, the Bahamas and Acapulco. From 1976 to 1983, Mr. Brauer held management positions with Omni International Hotels and The Hyatt Hotel Company. When he joined The Ritz Carlton Hotel Company in 1983, Mr. Brauer was instrumental in leading the organisation to become the most admired and revered hotel management companies in the world. In 1996, Mr. Brauer changed course and became President of the Miraval Resort Group, where he successfully operated Miraval Resort & Spa in Tuscon, AZ.

As President and CEO of Mr. Brauer received his formal education in Germany, Belgium and London, as well as at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. He was an avid sportsman and outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed spending time with his family at their home in New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesaukee.

He is survived by his wife, Lou Ann Brauer, and sons Alex, Jason and Max. Mr. Brauer also leaves two sisters, Nore Heil, her husband Hans and daughter Tina; sister Inge Warmuth, husband Gunther, son Knute and his wife, Sonja.

A memorial service was held at the First Christian Church in Wolfeboro, NH on Sunday, September 9.
