The Daylesford Singers hold the first of three performances at the Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society's headquarters on the corner of Dundonald and Washington Streets this evening. Directed by Gaynor Gallant, and accompanied by Mark Dorrell, they will present a mixed programme of a capella and accompanied arrangements, including Andrew Lloyd Webber and Beach Boys medleys. In addition, clarinettist Lisa Maule will play works by Messager and Giampieri.
Also on the programme is the a capella octet, Consorted Effort, who will sing original arrangements by James Burn, including ‘Do You Know the Way to San Jose?' as well as other popoular favourites from their repertoire.
The concert is being produced by Julie Hastings-Smith, and will begin at 8 p.m. Other performances are on tomorrow and Friday at the same time. Tickets ($15) are available from the Daylesford box office between 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. For telephone bookings ( 292-0848 during box office hours.
lBrassworks (Tim Rhodes and Conrad Roach, trumpets; Kent Hayward, French horn; Michael McDonough, trombone; plus William Duncan on organ, will present a free classical concert at St. John's church, Pembroke on Sunday evening beginning at 7.30 p.m.
The programme will include Renaissance music, pieces for organ and brass by Handel and Bach (arranged by former Anglican Cathedral organist and Bermuda Philharmonic Society founder, Drummond Woolf), as well as a transcription of ‘Claire de Lune' arranged by Villaneuva , works for brass solo by Vivaldi and Mancini, a movement from an Alvinoni concerto, and contemporary arrangements of ‘Amazing Grace' and ‘When the Saints go Marching In'. In addition to ensemble playing by Brassworks, including one instance where each of the quartet stands at a corner of the church, there will be individual solos by its members.
A retiring collection wil be taken in aid of the Pembroke Parish Restoration Fund.
The first performance in the annual Concert in the Park series, which was cancelled last Sunday due to rain, will take place in Victoria Park this Sunday, beginning at 6 p.m. Entitled ‘Island Flavours', it will open with the Bermuda All Star Steel Band, and include Jahstice, Prestege, Calente (salsa dancers), the Portuguese band, Ilha Verde, and conclude with the Fiery Limbo Show. Some seating will be provided. Food stalls and a play area for children available. Admission is free. The event is jointly sponsored by the Corporation of Hamilton and the Bank of Butterfield.
The Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society has once again engaged the services of Jane McCulloch to direct its July production of Shakespeare's ‘Love's Labour's Lost' at Daylesford. Ms McCulloch, who is the artistic director of her own theatre company, The English Chamber Theatre, first came to Bermuda in 1992 for the Bermuda Festival. Since then she has directed four Festival and four BMDS productions.
‘Love's Labour's Lost' is billed as “a captivating romantic comedy displaying amusing characters and playful dialogue which, combined with elegant costumes and musical numbers, gives an intellectual, yet lighthearted cultural theatrical experience to its audience”. The main story is interwoven with a sub-plot involving additional characters, thus adding the fun of a show within a show.
In this production, the play will be set in Edwardian England in 1913 just before the outbreak of the First World War. Performances will be from July 10-20 excluding July 14, and begin at 8 p.m. The Daylesford box office will be open on July 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9 between 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m., and on performance nights also between 5.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Major credit cards will be accepted by ( 292-9848 during box office hours.
