ON THE ARTS SCENE

The Bermuda National Gallery is hosting an evening lecture by Ori Soltes this evening, beginning at 5.30 p.m. Mr. Soltes is professorial lecturer in the Theology and Fine Arts departments of Georgetown University, and a frequent lecturer in the resident, national and international study programmes of the Smithsonian Institution. He has taught and guest-curated guest exhibitions across the United States and internationally. Admission ($10 members, $15 others) is payable at the door. Love will be more than in the air on Sunday when the opens its juried members' show at 5.30 p.m. The gallery walls will be filled with various works based on the theme "Love".

Featured artists are Stacey Amos, Betsy Mulderig and Manuel Palacio. Miss Amos will exhibit oils, while Miss Mulderig's chosen media is oil. Each artist has a distinctive style, and both enjoy using vibrant colours. Mr. Palacio will show his latest collection of bronze sculptures.

"There are so many different facets to love, and I am trying to portray various perceptions - courtship and the loss of love among them," Miss Mulderig says. "It should be an interesting show."

Mr. Palacio's has been working on his bronzes for a year, and says his favourite is 'El Beso' ('The Kiss'). Another is 'Stepping into my own Skin,' which he describes as "a small figure with big, curvaceous hips", and 'Touch Too,' a reclining female torso.

"The exhibition is sure to be very colourful and dramatic - it's what love is all about," Curator Justine Foster says.

The gallery is also appealing for a company or office to allow them to use their photocopier once every four months to print their newsletter. The gallery will supply the manpower and paper. To help (234-2809.

The are sponsoring a 12-week series of artistic workshops, entitled 'Peace of Art Project,' beginning on February 2. They are designed "to provide a nurturing and creative environment for children and youth to celebrate, examine and promote peace through the arts". The workshops, to include fine and performing arts, will take place on Saturday mornings and continue through May 11.

Children and young people aged five to 18 of all races, ethnicities and religions are welcome to participate, but space is limited. l Masterworks has a new artist-in-residence at its Dockyard gallery. She is Jamaican-born Nicole Pe?a, who makes her home in Canada. Her medium is acrylic on canvas and she is a figurative painter. She will be here until the end of March, and will hold another exhibition of her work that month. Miss Pe?a's last Bermuda exhibition was in November of last year. For further information ( 234-0701.
