Extra Screening for BIFF Local Films
Due to overwhelming demand, the Bermuda International Film Festival (BIFF) has added a fourth screening for the two documentaries by Bermudian filmmakers in this year's festival. 'St. David's: An Island Near Bermuda', by director Lucinda Spurling, and Dana Zhyon Selassie's film, 'Children of the Sea', will have their fourth screening at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute theatre on March 25 at 6.30 p.m. All other screenings of these films are sold out. Tickets for the additional screening, as well as the other 69 films in the festival, are now available online at www.bermudafilmfest.com, or from the festival box office, 1 Passenger Terminal, Front Street, Hamilton daily (except Sunday) between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
International Portuguese singer coming
l Popular Portuguese accordian artist and singer Quim Barreiros arrives in Bermuda this weekend to give two performances at the Spanish Point Boat Club. He will be accompanied by a group of five musicians. The first dinner show, on Saturday, which will also include local singer Stephanie Pacheco and the musical group Ilha Verde, is already sold out, but tickets (adults $35, children up to age ten free) for Sunday's 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. show are available at The Music Box. Sunday's programme programme will also include Bermudian singer Carlos Cabral and the Hot Danczers. Mr. Quim last visited Bermuda in 1973 performing on a cruise ship. He is currently on a tour which has included the US, Curacao and Aruba, and will include Germany, France and Europe.
Jeffrey Porter at Masterworks
l Spring will come early to the Masterworks Foundation's Bermuda House Lane gallery this weekend when live orchids grown by Jeffrey Porter will enhance the premier exhibition of his botanical photographs. Mr. Porter is an avid orchid grower, who works for the Parks Department. The exhibition opens March 20 and continues through April 1.
Daylesford Singers Concert
l March 25-27 marks the return of the 'not quite annual' concert of The Daylesford Singers who, together with guest artists, will present a diversified and entertaining programme of music and dance at Daylesford Theatre. Patrons will enjoy music from Abba to Rogers and Hammerstein; Gilbert and Sullivan to Queen; Jerome Kern to Boublil and Schoenberg, and the mix will include a selection of a capella and traditional songs. Guest artist is French horn player and Warwick Academy music teacher Kent Hayward. In addition, Joanna Powell will lead selected students from Cedar Bridge Academy dance programme. Ms Powell has been actively involved with the Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society (of which The Daylesford Singers are a part) as a choreographer for several years.
Curtain time will be 8 p.m. and tickets ($20) are available from the Daylesford Theatre box office as follows: March 18-19, 22-24: 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. March 25-26: 5.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 27: 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Telephone bookings with credit card during box office hours. Anne Frank exhibition for City Hall
l From May 10 for four weeks, the Jewish Community of Bemuda will host an exhibition entitled 'Anne Frank: A History for Today'. Taking place in the Bermuda Society of Arts gallery at City Hall, it will serve as the centrepiece of a community-wide event, focusing on issues of tolerance and human rights.
To make this event a success, organisers are appealing for volunteers to serve in many ways: 1. As dedicated docents, for which training will be provided by representatives of the Anne Frank Center USA. Docents will be required to give a minimum of four hours in total over four weeks, and must be aged 13 or over. 2. Video/monitor book sales: To help visitors to the exhibition view videos and computer materials, and also sell literature provided by the Anne Frank Center. 3. Assist in several areas, including assembly crew, publicity, hosting visitors, and more.
