ORNAMENTAL
Onions, onions and more onions dot the lawns and walkways at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel.
Following on the success of ?Bermuda Goes Hogge Wilde!? creative individuals, organisations and groups have submitted designs for Masterworks onion sculptures.
The winning 50 make up ?Bermuda is Onionation!? and are on display at the until they will be auctioned off on July 14.
Masterworks president Tom Butterfield, curator Elise Outerbridge and co-ordinator Fiona Cusack took on a walkabout to see all the onions which made up the display.
The onions line the entrance and stand sentry around the grounds, and everyone is invited to take part in the fun by voting for their favourite.
Ballot forms are available at the Concierge desk in the hotel lobby. All interested parties are invited to register for the Onion Auction, which is on Bastille Day and the Masterworks Foundation?s 19th birthday.
The event will be launched with a reception between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and the auction begins at 7 p.m.
The onions range from a mirrored onion, onion rings, Brer Rabbit in his onion patch, an onion tart and so on.
They were designed by school children, renowned local artists and a few unknowns.
Mr. Butterfield said the Bermuda Onionation was a spin-off from the Hogge project.
?The onion is representative of Bermuda and was one of our main exports at one point,? he said.
?I am hoping that some of our buyers might be able to re-export some of these back to their homes. Every living room needs one, every patio and every porch needs one.?
Mrs. Outerbridge said the funds raised from the auction are divided between two worthy projects.
?The funds will got to the public art and art education,? she said.
?Part of the funds from the Hogge project went to the big Chesley Trott sculpture and we are hoping to add another piece of public art.?
They said that this time they had a total cross-section of schools, groups, individuals, artists and families who took part in creating the onions.
?These are people that just had innate talent and wanted to do a couple of things,? added Mr. Butterfield, ?And they had a hell of a lot of fun.?
Ms Cusack said the hogges were a little easier to move around. ?This was a logistical nightmare,? she said.
?People were so used to seeing the trucker who was driving up with them that every time he came they gave him a round of applause.?
