Planning a healthy diet your child will love
If you've ever wondered how to get your kids to eat the dreaded broccoli, then The Family Centre (TFC) has the event for you.
TFC is hosting a half-day workshop on "nutrition and your child" on October 28 to encourage people to take an active interest in their family's dietary habits and long-term overall health.
The event will be led by renowned clinical nutritionist and psychotherapist, Kim Jenks, who will answer critical nutritional questions on how to plan and eat a healthy diet for your child and family.
The goal of the workshop is to help create an everyday eating plan that will last for life, rather than an enforced diet that is difficult to sustain. Topics will include ideas for every meal of the day, menu planning, purchasing healthy food and weight management, all intended to be incorporated into daily life.
Ms Jenks will also address health issues that are affecting Bermuda's youth, including Diabetes, one of Bermuda's fastest growing diseases, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Ms Jenks will explain how balancing blood sugar levels can prevent diabetes, and offer dietary ideas that help prevent ADHD and work to reverse it once diagnosed.
Designed especially for families with young children ages four to 11, the workshop will urge children to get involved in healthy eating through fun learning activities.
Kim Jenks received a Masters degree in Nutrition at the prestigious Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London and went on to earn a second Masters in Clinical Psychotherapy in 2006.
As a nutrition consultant in London, Ms Jenks worked with clients with a wide range of health issues and appeared on several television programmes where she offered expert advice on healthy diets.
Shortly after arriving in Bermuda in 2002, Ms Jenks began volunteering at TFC, where she now donates her expertise in nutrition and psychotherapy to some of the Island's neediest children and families.
The mission of TFC is "to ensure that families have the skills they need to become successful".
The workshop will be held at The Family Centre at 25 Point Finger Road in Paget. To register telephone 232-1116 ext. 225 or email stephanietfc.prevention.bm. The cost is $15.
