Prep school fair at BUEI
CSC Advisory Services are holding an Independent Preparatory School Fair today and tomorrow at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI).
The schools that are taking part in the event include Blue Ridge School, Darlington School, Kimball Union Academy, Lee Academy, Lyndon Institute, Mercersburg Academy, Perkiomen School, The Putney School, St. Johnsbury Academy and the Washington Academy.
Jack Cummings, director of admissions at St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont, said that students from Bermuda attending that school are leaving lasting marks inside and outside the classroom.
"Twelfth-graders Akira Robinson, of Southampton, and Tse Minors of Hamilton Parish, are two of 12 Bermudians enrolled at the school this year who have earned Honour Roll recognition," he said.
"Several of the students have also taken on leadership roles in class projects, and all are involved in extra-curricular activities. Akira, for example, is president of the school's Future Business Leaders of America chapter, and Tse is co-editor of the student newspaper. Both also serve as student dormitory proctors, assisting adult supervisors."
Mr. Cummings went on to say that Smith's resident Michael Pimentel, a 12th grader, has been active in several community service projects, including volunteering as a referee for local youth sports programmes.
Bermudian students are making a big impression on Vermont athletic fields as well.
Tse Minors was selected to the Vermont All-State field hockey team in both 2005 and 2006. Korie Tucker, a 12th grader from St. David's, was named to the Vermont All-Region and All-State boys soccer teams and Michael Pimentel, a 2006 Vermont All-Conference Football Team selection as a place kicker and defensive end, is also co-captain of the school's varsity boys basketball team," he said.
"Other Bermudan students active outside the classroom include 12th grader Steven Lambert, of Paget, who serves as manager for the school's boys varsity basketball team, student dorm proctor and intramural sports participant; 11th grader Chris Horst, of Somerset, who has volunteered for several community service projects and referees intramural sports events.
"Eleventh grader Femi Martins, from Warwick, who enjoys playing in intramural basketball tournaments; and brothers Mark and David Selly of Warwick, both 10th graders active in the school's auto mechanics programme."
Mr. Cummings said that Bermudian students have had a long history of standout athletic performances, most notably on the school's soccer and track teams.
"Nekai Durrant, a 1990 Academy graduate from Southampton, set school and Vermont state records in the 200-meter dash, and Bayon Robinson of Smith's, who graduated in 1998, was a two-time 1997 and 1998 state champion in the 800-metre, as well as the 1998 Vermont champion in the 400-metre."
He added that other winning sprinters were Lamont Simmons and Damon Ming.
On the football front past students Scott Morton, Andre Wood, Mike Sealy, Shane Sheaff, Jamal Ming and Damon Ming were "standout players", he said.
The schools fair is open to the public from 5.30 to 7.30 p.m. today and tomorrow. For more information Joseph Robinson on 238-8232 or Merle Swan William on 292-2030.
