Quick and Slick's Christmas Adventures
It was early December and the Christmas Holiday was soon approaching. Everyone seemed to have the Christmas Spirit, especially two little Skinks named Quick and Slick. Everything was an adventure to them. They had almost drowned in the 24th May Swimming Race, were nearly captured as specimens for the Aquarium's Endemic Exhibit, and almost diced in the kitchen of MR Onions! They have no tails to prove it! They never mean to get into so much danger it just happens.
This time they were at the Annual Christmas Boat Parade. The whole of Albouy's Point was lit. The two Skinks just stood there and took in all the beautiful sights then suddenly Slick had an idea. He darted toward the parading boats. Quick had no choice but to follow his friend. Quick caught up with Slick. They were perched right on the end of the dock. Without an explanation Slick told Quick to jump on the count of three. A whale foot came by and on the count of three the two Skinks leaped with all their might.
They just about landed on the float. Little did they know, they had landed on the whale's blowhole. With big smiles they let out a sigh of relief, Just as soon as they sighed they found themselves being catapulted in the air, right into the cold water. Quick and Slick quickly tried to dog paddle to the dock before becoming fish bait. Exhausted, they made it back to the dock. They looked around to make sure of no other surprises and then collapsed. They were safe!.
A week or so later the two decide to attend the traditional Bermuda Christmas Parade. The band played “Jingle Bells” as the Majorettes danced on Front Street. Quick and Slick were watching the parade from a store awning. Quick started bouncing to the music. He bounced so hard that the awning sprung him in the air. He landed on the hat of a Majorette while Slick landed back on the awning. Hurrying to save his friend Slick hopped off the awning and crawled down the store wall to ground level. Hastily, he searched or his friends and at the same time tried not to get stomped on by the big feet. Meanwhile, the Majorettes had marched two blocks and had started to dance. Quick was bouncing in the air with every movement of the Majorette.
With one twist of the head He was tossed in the air. This time he landed on a Majorettes boot. Luckily there was a moment of stillness and Quick took that chance to hop off the boot. He ran for his dear life. He stopped and as he looked up he saw shining sticks being tossed up in the air. The sight scared him so much that his little legs into over drive. He didn't know where he was going, he just ran. He made his way to the sidewalk and just his luck, his friend was perched right next to him. They had found each other. The two skinks were exhausted and decided to go home. They had experienced enough adventure for the day.
Quick and Slick were so excited they just couldn't wait to go on their next holiday adventure. This time they planned to hitch a ride in a car to see the lights and decorations around Bermuda. They waited at a nearby gas station. They figured that would be the best place to hitch a ride. About one minute later a car stopped at the gas pump right in front of them. They climbed up the side of the car and jumped into the window. Inside the car were four people, there were Christmas light Judges and one was the driver.
The car had arrived at the first participant's exhibit. The judges wound down their windows and pulled out their scoring pads.
“What do you think about The Robinson's Exhibit,” the first judge asked.
“Oh, I think it's good. It probably deserves a six exhibit, but I like, really like the Thompson's Exhibit. Now that deserves a ten,” The second judge said, pointing to the house.
“You're right.”
The judges all took a moment and scribbled scores on their pads.
Quick and Slick looked at the scoring pads and looked at each other.
“Are those judges crazy? The Robinson's deserves a ten and the Thompson's deserve a five,” Quick said.
“You are one hundred percent right,” Slick replied.
On the way to the next exhibit the car stopped short at the stoplights. Quick and Slick were flung into the air. They landed on one of the judges' head. The judge screamed and jumped franticly. The Stoplight turned green and they drove off, but quickly pulled over. Quick and Slick didn't know what to do. They were just as terrified as the judges. As soon as they stopped the driver got out of the car. He carefully took Quick and Slick and placed them on a Cedar Tree branch, got in the car and then drove away. The two Skinks were all alone and lost. The two Skinks weren't feeling so adventuresome now. They decided to try to find some food before it got to dark. Just then Quick smelled something sweet. He and Slick dashed in that direction. The smell seemed to be coming from a bottle. Slick rapidly climbed it. As he got to the mouth of the bottle he poked his head in. He poked his head in so far that he fell in the bottle. Disappointed to see that there was no food Slick tried to climb out of the bottle but it was no use, it was just too steep and slippery. He called to his friends Quick, who was patiently waiting on the outside. Quick hastily climbed up the bottle to help his friend. He tried to reach Slick but he leaned over too much and fell in.
The Skinks were in a terrible predicament. They were hungry, lost, lonely, miserable and stuck in a trashed KOBE bottle.
The sky was pitch black and the streetlights had long been on. Quick and Slick slurped up the remaining liquid in the bottle and fell asleep. In the middle of night Quick and Slick awoke to a swift kick by a human foot. The bottle landed on it side. Although the two Skinks were rather dizzy they weren't hurt. They climbed out of the bottle as fast as they could. They looked straight ahead and kept on running. Pretty soon they stopped and low and behold there was an inviting little cottages right in front of them. When they got to the cottage they crawled into the window. They perched themselves near the warm fire. They were so exhausted they felt like they could sleep for a whole day and that is just what they did.
It was early morning. Quick and Slick awoke to the sound of people opening presents. Quick rubbed his eyes and looked again suddenly they realised something. It was Christmas! The two Skinks smiled warmly.
The air was filled with sweet smells of Cassava pie, baked turkey, Pound Cake and all sorts of Christmas dishes. The two Skinks followed the sweet smell into the kitchen. Cautiously, the Skinks sniffed the dish of Cassava Pie. They took a nibble and then another. Soon a whole dent was left in every Christmas dish in the kitchen. The two fell back on an oven glove, reflecting on all their holiday adventures and the delicious food they had just gobbled. There was no doubt in their mind that a Christmas in Bermuda was the best.
