Raising funds for Raleigh Bermuda
Four Bermudians are on their way to Sabah, Malaysia to participate in The Kinabalu Challenge.
The aim is to raise funds to support Raleigh Bermuda’s ongoing youth development work. Raleigh Bermuda sends young Bermudians to Malaysia and Africa where they volunteer with youth from other nations.
As a team, they’ll helicopter into the jungle and then hike, bike and raft their way through rainforest.
They will then have to build their own shelter and climb 4100 metres (13,451 feet) to the top of Mount Kinabalu in what is being billed as an ultimate adventure race.
The event takes place over a week against the spectacular setting of Borneo. Its aim is to challenge the skills and endurance of teams as they compete with others from around the world and the elements.
Raleigh Bermuda executive director Kristin White said: “Raleigh Bermuda’s mission is to challenge young Bermudians so they can see that they are capable of more than they thought possible.
“We make special efforts to reach young people who are at risk, or ‘at a standstill’.
“Over the last year, we have — not surprisingly — seen an increase in the amount of applications for our programme, so we have been looking to expand our funding base.
“The Kinabalu Challenge presented us with the perfect opportunity to do that, plus bring something adventurous and exciting to Bermuda.
“[It] is run by British Military Fitness, and generally sees about eight teams of four competing in the race. The Bermuda team is excited about the challenge, and is not just in it for the experience — they want to win!”
Donations can be made to the Kinabalu Challenge, Bank of Bermuda account 010-882-868-001. Cheques can be mailed to Raleigh Bermuda P.O. Box HM 2475 Hamilton. One hundred percent of donations made will go directly to Raleigh Bermuda, as each member of the team has paid for all of their own expenses for the challenge.
