Rodigan wins the clash of the DJs
London's David Rodigan won the Cyclone Clash on Saturday night at Kindley Field.
He competed against top Jamaican DJ Tony Matterhorn and they both had dub-plates ? specialised jingles made for them by recording artists ? which regularly out did the other.
There was a definite and exacting battle going on between that pair ? both vying to gain the crowd's ? the ultimate judges ? approval. It is almost like getting autographs from celebrities and then a massive audience decides on which one is better ? the big difference is that music moves people.
DJ Matterhorn, the younger of the two, had more of the newer reggae artists on his play list, like Beanie Man and others, while DJ Rodigan took the crowd back to good ol' days of Bob Marley, Eek A Mouse, the Kilamanjaro sound system, and others of that era and genre. He, with what is obviously his famous dance, brought the crowd up to date with lots of today's musicians ? one being Caperton.
Although Matterhorn did a lot of talking, DJ Rodigan set the scene for almost every song by adding a bit of lore, which took your mind's eye to either to a particular river or place in Jamaica or gave you a sneak peak into the inner life of the artist. This was a part of his appeal with many of the audience members.
After DJ Rodigan's last 15-minute play session, a piece that was recorded by Bermuda Police Media Relations officer Dwaine Caines played. It said, there had been a serious incident at the Cyclone Clash Competition on Saturday night, where it seemed that DJ Matterhorn was killed by DJ Rodigan in the Clash.
Bootsie's song 'Bermudians Love to Drink' was also turned into a jingle in support of DJ Rodigan.
The competition was fierce and there were times when the crowd was rooting for DJ Matterhorn, wafts of shooting fire into the air, arms up in appeal as the audience squealed.
And then DJ Rodigan would return and the crowds did the same ? whistling and horns included.
It was difficult to imagine who would win the clash at the end of the night, and it was almost like a boxing match when it goes to the judges.
Like the musical selectors, the audience was racially diverse and the crowds, skanked and rocked to the reggae beats.
All in all, the event was peaceful until the last few minutes when a fight broke out between four men ? three against one. Security quickly moved in and removed the offenders, the audience relaxed and enjoyed the last few minutes of the show. Both DJs Matterhorn and Rodigan spoke about the violence and urged the offenders to calm down and be at peace.
Tonight in Cyclone 3, DJ Matterhorn will play at Gombeys along with Twin Star, Vybez Alliance and Brother Richie from HOTT 107.5.
