Royal Gazette book captures a century of photographs
The Royal Gazette will enter the world of book publishing with a limited edition book titled, BERMUDA: Our People, Our Story.
The 160-page pictorial will showcase the people of Bermuda from the turn of the century until 1969. The Royal Gazette has launched this project as a way to involve their readers as well as capture a century of photographs.
BERMUDA: Our People, Our Story, will be filled with photos showcasing Bermudians, at home, at work and at play.
There has been a great response to our initial announcement of the book. The saying “every picture tells a story” holds true with this project. The wonderful stories that Bermudians have told us concerning their photos are precious.
Photos submitted for the book are from people’s personal collections – from old photo albums, a box under the bed, or a bottom drawer in the bedroom. It’s the photo of a grandparent, an uncle, an aunt or cousins. They could be enjoying the Sunday picnic on Ports Island, or playing cricket in the back yard.
It’s the photo of the family barbershop business, of the folks lined up for Gift Club at St. Monica’s Mission Hall. It’s the employees at R.D. Black’s; repairing the horse’s cart, and the pupils playing in the yards at Howard Academy and Technical Institute. In addition to pictures submitted by The Royal Gazette readers, the book will also include photos that represent Bermuda’s historical businesses during the “early” days.
Photo submissions are being solicited until the end of June. We seek never-before published pictures. Please indicate the year the photograph was taken, what it represents, and the names of the people in it. For example – Recess: 1956, Pupils take recess in the yard of Howard Academy John Doe, Peter Smith, Michelle Barnett, Janet Jones Submitted by: Ms. Mary Jane.
