Seeing Bermuda through the eyes of visitors
Cruise ship tourists, Alfred and Judith Inman, aboard the Norwegian Majesty, docked on Ordnance Island, St. George's, were a happy, vibrant couple visiting from Albion, Maine last week.
"We love Bermuda and cruising! On our first visit, 29 years ago, we flew here January of 1974 and we stayed at Banana Beach on beautiful South Shore. Since then we have visited here several times on cruise ships and we always have a wonderful time," said Mrs. Inman.
This time they boarded the ship from Boston late on Sunday afternoon and arrived in Bermuda on Tuesday morning. They enjoyed the passage but noted that it was a little rough in the beginning.
"When we awoke early Tuesday morning and saw the beautiful turquoise sea, we were very happy. As we neared Bermuda it was like being a part of an exquisite seascape that we will always remember," said Mrs. Inman.
On their first day in Bermuda they enjoyed an unhurried and relaxed walk around St. George's, even though there were two ships in town. They appreciated the old town for its historic sights and had a great evening on King's Square Tuesday evening.
"We had a wonderful evening Tuesday watching the Town Crier ducking a woman and we found the Gombeys to be so fascinating. They had us swaying to their rhythmic drum beats and they put on a super performance! That's the third time we have seen them in almost 30 years."
Asked what their favourite place to visit in Bermuda was, they said St. George's because it is peaceful, quiet and the people seem very gentle and kind.
"We are country people and crowds make me very nervous. We have enjoyed travelling around the Island on our bus pass. When we were younger we rented mopeds but the traffic seems rather intense and hectic now," said Mrs. Inman, a retired paralegal for 45 years.
"We mostly keep to ourselves and enjoy Bermuda's relaxed and simple ways. I like the casual and friendly greetings that people exchange with us. Everyone seems very kind and polite and after 28 years as an army officer that is pleasing," reflected Mr. Inman.
While out and about, they enjoyed lunches at Dockyard's Frog and Onion in the Cooperage Building, along with Freddie's on the Square, and Carriage House on Somers' Wharf.
"We think that we might fly to Bermuda the next time we come and stay in a nice guest house or a resort hotel like Grotto Bay.
"One of the highlights of this trip was visiting St. David's Lighthouse and Clearwater and Turtle Beaches. The lovely beaches were pristine and quiet. The sea felt warm while the white sand was very soft on our feet."
