Stepping out for fashion

Classy fashions for men and women will be on display this weekend.

Bermudians are well known for their hip fashion sense, and in addition to all the informal “models” who are seen out and about strutting their stuff, there is also a wealth of local designing talent. Put the two together and what have you got? A monster fashion show set for this Sunday, November 15, that's what!

Yes, JaKoMa Entertainment is doing it again, taking the Bermudian fashion industry to another level with its ‘JaKoMa Snow' winter fashion show “front and centre” in the heart of Hamilton.

JaKoMa Snow will mark the start of the most recent development of JaKoMa Entertainment, which is Bermudian fashion week.

The indoor parking lot of No. 1 passenger terminal on Front Street, chosen to accommodate what is described as “the longest runway in Bermuda” at 100 feet, will be transformed into a place of style and elegance with a winter theme to set the mood, and two large projection screens will ensure that no-one misses the action.

The show will feature the clothing of 15 local stores, including Max Mara, Aston & Gunn, 27th Century Boutique, A.S. Cooper's, Stefanel, Up Scale Fashion, Voila, Toxzy's Fashion and Novelty Store, and the soon-to-open Fcuk French Connection fashions. International designer Leon Parham from Atlanta will again be on hand with his Papa for Mamma's Boy Inc. label designs.

His fashions were so well received at JaKoMa's B.O.L.D. fashion show in July that he was invited back to feature his original winter designs.

Twenty-six female and 20 male models, all Bermudian, will be showing a wide variety of clothing. The Mac (a division of Estee Lauder) make-up team from Trimingham's, as well as operators from Eden hair salon will ensure that the models look their very best on the runway.

“We are highlighting Bermuda stores and the lines they have for the winter and Christmas seasons,” JaKoMa spokesperson Lamont Robinson said.

Rhythm Nation's Drumming Batucada ensemble band, led by Keith Caisey, will play for the pre-show reception. Mr. Caisey has performed around the world in such countries as Australia, North Africa, Paris, Czechoslovakia and Brazil, and has participated in over 250 recordings.

The entertainment line-up also includes aspiring vocalist, 21-year-old Larrita Adderley, winner of the Colonial Insurance Group J2K vocal talent competition. Currently working at the Creative Force Productions Ltd. studio, she is planning to launch her first single in January, 2004.

In addition, CedarBridge Academy student, and aspiring fashion model Christy-Lee Weeks, who has been training with JaKoMa, will be making her runway debut.

Cellular One will be demonstrating their wares, and Miles Market will be supplying water.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Delta Theta Sigma Inc. (Bermuda Chapter) sorority.

“JaKoMa Entertainment's mission is to develop and promote Bermudian artists and recognise Bermudian charities,” Mr. Robinson said. “The sorority was chosen because of its outreach programmes which focus on the overall development of the future ladies of Bermuda.”

The fashion show is being sponsored by BGA, the Colonial Group, Miles Market and Cellular One Bermuda on the Rocks, supporters of arts and talents.

Tickets ($25 advance $30 at the door) can be purchased at participating stores
