Voting rules for St. George's Corporation elections

On November 6, a new mayor will be elected for St. George's, along with three Aldermen and five Common Councillors - these comprise the body of the Corporation. Nomination Day is October 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Corporate Secretary, Nancy Hooper said: "This year the polling station will be held on Ordnance Island at the Cruise Ship Terminal from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. The candidates will be there during the voting hours.

"Normally it is held at St. George's Town Hall but repairs are being made there as a result of Hurricane Fabian, September 5, 2003." Mrs. Hooper reviewed the rules for voting and all voters must be Bermudian or hold Bermuda Status:

1. The owner of commercial property in the town gets one vote and the tenant gets one vote - provided that person is a Bermudian and is at least 21 years old.

2. The owner of a home in St. George's gets one vote and the owner of rental property gets one vote. Residential tenants get one vote.

3. People who live in St. George's and own a business in the town are entitled to only one vote - but they can nominate another person (a Bermudian) to vote on behalf of the business.

A St. George's property owner does not have to live within the Corporation's boundaries to be able to vote there.

4. Property owners, tenants and proxy voters must have valid photo identification, be registered to vote in St. George's and all relevant town taxes must be paid in full by October 17, 2003.
