Waterspout?s ?As You Like It? sets it in the Swinging Sixties
Following last summer?s successful production of Shakespeare?s ?The Tempest?, Waterspout winds up the fun this year with its period production of the Bard?s ?As You Like It? ? but what a period! It is the late 60s; the ?summer of love? is in full flow; flower power is flourishing, and our merry troupe of thespians recreate the Forest of Arden in hippie Happy Valley, Pembroke.
Come and boo evil Oliver with his Luchadore hitman; empathise with the vegetarian Duke banished to the forest with only venison for food; suffer with Rosalind?s gender confusion as she disguises herself as a man but pretends to be a woman; try to keep up as we watch Amiens fall in love with the Duke, the Duke fall in love with Jaques, and Jaques fall in love with Touchstone, but Touchstone just lusts for Audrey who is William?s girlfriend.
Lovelorn Orlando carves his sweetheart Rosalind?s name on the forest trees only to be berated by her as an eco-vandal, while Corin the shepherd explains Marxism, the Warlord Frederick turns pacifist and joins a cult, and Celia tries to finish her crossword.
Directed by Barbara Jones with music by Mike Jones, Tommy Smith and Peter Profit, movement by JoAnna Powell, and featuring a cast of 16, this show will help summer last into September.
Make an evening of it: bring a picnic and enjoy the Corporation?s beautiful Fort Hamilton park and the glorious view of sunset over Hamilton Harbour.
