Welcome to the Onion Patch

Carrying on with the success of "Bermuda Goes Hogge Wilde!", the Masterworks Foundation has introduced "Bermuda Onionation".

Native Bermudians refer to themselves as "Onions" after the Island's signature crop, the Bermuda onion, which along with Easter lilies, was once Bermuda's most popular export, said Masterworks Foundation director Tom Butterfield.

"It is truly a home-grown product, the plant represents all Bermudians and their popularity overseas," he said.

"Who hasn't tasted a Bermuda onion?"

The polymer onions which will be decorated by various Island individuals and groups were manufactured in Toronto and, thanks to the generosity of Fast Forward Freight, 50 onions will soon be shipped to Bermuda.

The onions will be painted and designed as a way of raising funds for public art.

"The prototype will be on display outside of the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art to pique the creative juices," said Mr. Butterfield.

"Inquiries by artists, architects, decorators, graphic designers, artists schools and the just plain creative are welcome.

"(Those interested should) call 236-2950 to submit their ideas by filling out an application form.

"The completed onions will be on display in the Spring and will eventually be auctioned off, proceeds (going) towards art education and public art.

"The Hogge Wilde Trust reserves the rights of reproduction of the finished product as well as the right to the property."
