What's on where

The Bermuda Stroke and Family Support Association (BSFSA) was founded in July 1992 by Mark Selley and Hilary Soares. Its purpose is to:

Deal with the aftermath of stroke

Offer support, help, advice, encouragement and options

Assist survivors and families affected by stroke, and bring them together so that, by using the association's collective experiences, everyone can help each other to problem-solve and cultivate personal coping skills and resources

Raise public awareness of the support available to survivors of stroke

To educate the community on stroke prevention and treatment

Mr. Selley and Mrs. Soares are stroke survivors and the association's chief organisers. The association is affiliated with the American Stroke Association and the Courage stroke network.

According to Mr. Selley, the BSFSA was founded in response to local statistics which, at the time, indicated one person was affected by stroke every day. (The figure is now two per day). One third of stroke patients die, while two thirds are survivors who go on to therapy and rehabilitation. One quarter of those become independent, but the rest are left disabled and unable to fend for themselves.

The BSFSA has a response team in call day and night, and meets once a month at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
