You can still have fun on New Year?s Day

If you are still raring to go after all of the New Year's Eve partying, then Chewstick will have an event for you on New Year's Day.

The Chewstick's 4th Annual Anniversary Celebration takes place at Champion's Sports Bar, on Reid Street.

Chewstick's Neo-Griot Lounge chief executive officer Gavin (Jata) Smith said patrons could expect "a jam-packed night full of live entertainment where you are encouraged to take part".

"The night will feature performances by a virtual who's who of the local entertainment scene and by in-house band Olybhosh with the night ending with an old school style dance party with DJs The Dirkistan Freedom Fighters and special guest DJs."

Chewstick's Neo-Griot Lounge is the creative mainstay on the local entertainment scene.

"If you haven't attended or heard of the Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge you haven't truly experienced Bermuda and all that our people have to offer," he added.

"Chewstick is an experience like no other, a place where all are welcome and free to come as they are. It's fairly well accepted that there exists a cultural divide between numerous factions on the Island; young/old, black/white, have/have not etc.

"Yet Chewstick has managed to carve out a niche and a devoted following that has appealed to a huge cross-section of the community and has kept this event alive and thriving."

The regular Chewstick events take place every other Sunday and as part of the Tourism Summer Series the event picked up the pace and had a weekly schedule.

But said Mr. Smith: "If you haven't attended it's a little tricky to explain. It's kind of like an old school jazz jook joint, with the feel of a Philly neo-soul spot, but with performances that run the gamut.

"Any given Sunday you will find an eclectic blend of colourful performances incorporating rap, soul, reggae, folk, rock and weird can't-quite-categorise-it acts.

"Guests are invited to perform by signing in The Book and are given the options to perform solo, with a backing track or with the assistance of in-house jam band Olybhosh."

Mr. Smith added: "And if you haven't heard Olybhosh perform you are definitely missing out.

"The band somewhat personifies the eclectic nature of the scene, which isn't surprising since it consists of the founding team that manages Chewstick.

"Olybhosh pulls from familiar influences, but unlike a lot of local acts they don't emulate their heroes and have managed to forge something quite original.

"They contribute to the night by also acting as filler if the night is slow to pick up the pace, so if you want to see them specifically you should definitely shoot to attend earlier in the night."

A typical night begins at 8 p.m., Mr. Smith said.

"It gets heated up around 9ish and if you want a seat don't even think about it after 10 p.m. because people stay put, if you want to perform you definitely have to sign up before 10 p.m. because The Book will be full!

"We try and end at midnight, but have been known to spill over depending on the vibe. And it's definitely the most bang you'll get for your buck with a nominal charge of $5. It is one of the best nights you can get."

Tickets for the Anniversary Celebration are $10. For more info 504-2439 or infochewstick.com.
