Anchor & Hope named best gastropub
LONDON (Bloomberg) ¿ The Anchor & Hope in London was voted the UK's top pub for food for a third consecutive year, beating the Star Inn, Harome, Yorkshire; the Garrison, in London; and the Hinds Head, chef Heston Blumenthal's venue in the village of Bray.
The winning pub, just up the street from the Old Vic theatre, near Waterloo, serves seasonal English dishes such as duck hearts on toast, and a main of roast sea bass with salsify, warm anchovy dressing and butter almonds, costing £15 ($31).
"We work really hard to give people value for money, and the seasonal cooking we do is rightly popular," the chef-owner Jonathon Jones said yesterday in a telephone interview. "We change the menu twice daily and it is completely led by what our suppliers say is best. Also, we buy whole carcasses direct from farms and do our own butchery, so we get the best-quality meat."
The PubChef Top 30 Gastropub Awards are picked by a panel of 400 experts, including chefs Raymond Blanc and Anthony Worrall Thompson; and broadcaster Loyd Grossman. PubChef is published monthly with Morning Advertiser, which serves the drinks industry.
Other London pubs that made it onto the list include the Eagle, Farringdon; Gordon Ramsay's the Narrow, Limehouse; the Greyhound, Battersea; Anglesea Arms, off Goldhawk Road; the Gun, Docklands; the Cow, Westbourne Park; the Rosendale, West Dulwich.
Anchor & Hope opened in 2003 and made a name for the quality of its food, and for a no-reservations policy. This year, its sister Great Queen Street restaurant opened in Covent Garden
The survey was reported in the Evening Standard newspaper.
