The Segovia of the clarinet
It will be a case of 'all in the family' when renowned American clarinettist Richard Stoltzman and his son, pianist Peter Stoltzman, present the first of two Bermuda Festival performances at City Hall theatre this evening.
Mr. Stoltzman, Sr. has been hailed for doing for the clarinet what Segovia did for the guitar. His virtuosity, musicianship and personal magnetism have catapulted him to the highest ranks of international acclaim. A seasoned Festival performer, the clarinettist and recording artist is not only well known as a classical musician who has played with more than 100 orchestras, but also as an innovative jazz performer, and it is in the latter idiom that he and his son will demonstrate their expertise. In fact, the duo have delighted audiences around the world with their innovation and versatility ¿ qualities which are destined to delight local jazz fans. Family concerts are, in fact, part and parcel of Stoltzman family life. Peter, who plays guitar as well as piano, and violinist Lucy Chapman Stoltzman thrilled audiences of all ages with their first-ever family concert at Carnegie Hall.
In addition, Mr. Stoltzman, Sr. was the first clarinettist ever presented in recital at the famous New York venue, and has performed with such jazz giants are Mel Tormé, George Shearing and Woody Herman. A member of the New England Conservatory of Music faculty, Mr. Stoltzman makes music come alive through his residency and outreach programme, and while in Bermuda will conduct a masterclass at City Hall theatre on Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m., to which the public is welcome.
