Top vocal coach hopes to find Bermuda's next 'idol'

David Brewer

BEYONCE'S former vocal coach may just find his next "star" in Bermuda. David Brewer, an international opera star and classical and pop artistic developer, will be here in Bermuda next week to give a Master Class to six local aspiring singers providing them with voice coaching and tips of the trade.

Mr. Brewer, of Brewer International, a talent firm in Berlin, Germany, will also be performing with Bermuda's own soprano Marcelle Clamens in A Night at the Opera during this year's Bermuda Festival.

The multi-talented tenor has performed at some of the world's great theatres and opera houses including, La Scala, L'Opera de Bastille, Duetsches National Theater Weimer and Opera Monte Carlo, amongst many others. Mr. Brewer is also a publicist, artistic developer and voice coach for classical and pop artists across the globe - focusing on artists in the U.S. and in Germany. Two of his previous disciples include Grammy award-winning megastar Beyonce and Kelly Rowland while they were a part of their former musical group, Destiny's Child.

On February 9, six local singers, including Makeila Astwood, Lavette Fuentes, Selange Gitschner, Adrian Jones, Peter Nash and Toni Robinson will receive advice that might help them to become the next pop or classical superstar.

"I will be teaching six singers and they are not only of different genres in music but of different ages and experiences," said Mr. Brewer, who counts Grace Brumby, the pioneering and leading African American opera singer amongst one of his mentors. "I will be providing tips to ensure vocal freedom, interpretation and esteem building tips. I asked for it to be so and I look forward to this evening with great anticipation. One never knows...I may find my next star in Bermuda."

Mr. Brewer, who is also a former professional ballet and modern dancer/choreographer, has never been to Bermuda but is looking forward to the experience saying that he is "very excited about being invited" to the Festival.

His former student, Ms Clamens, invited the esteemed singer to perform with her on February 11 at the City Hall Theatre. Together they will delight opera fans with their interpretations of favourites including Mozart's Libiamo ne'lieti calici from Verdi's La Traviata and Puccini's Nessun Dorma. The pair will be accompanied by the Bermuda Festival Chamber Orchestra.

"Ms Clamens is a former student and now a professional and one that has made me proud," explained Mr. Brewer. "Her singing is quite beautiful and I look forward to a joint concert with this viable artist.

"I often perform with my students in order to advance them and their careers by inviting them to appear in a high-profile concert that I would be giving. This is not the case with Ms Clamens. She asked me and I graciously agreed because I know I will be challenged because of her immense artistry, making this concert a thrilling experience for the audience. Two consummate artist together produces fire!"

Up next for the music virtuoso is performing in La Traviata for Opera in the Park, Houston, Texas in August. He is also currently the executive producer on his first film based on the life of his mentor, Grace Bumbry, who is considered one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her generation.
