A BERMUDIAN'S DREAM ODYSSEY

On the trail: Bermudian adventurer Gray Robinson includes hiking in his extreme training programme, preparatory to embarking on a four-year, 75,000-mile adventure around the world using non-combustible forms of transport.

For the past three years Bermudian adventurer Gray Robinson has been working on what he describes as his 'dream odyssey' — a four-year, 75,000-mile, zero-carbon emission, global expedition which will traverse 48 countries, six continents, seven deserts, two oceans and a frozen sea, using many of today's extreme sports and other non-combustion forms of transportation.

Mr. Robinson introduced a youth development programme, 'Synergy n Motion', into local schools as a way of encouraging our children to be not only more adventurous in their own lives but also to embrace their own individual dreams of the future.

The concept of a TV series and feature film, 'PANGEA — World Without Borders', documenting the global expedition, was born, and is now poised to launch. The expedition will act as a medium to raise public awareness for non-profit, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community based charities, and the issues of climate change.

"With such cultural exposure and diversity, we will have the opportunity to interact with a variety of child refugee, poverty and emergency response organisations," Mr. Robinson says. "The project will spotlight those organisations which are, in so many ways, unrecognised for their humanitarian efforts due to a lack of exposure and resources."

If it seems curious that Mr. Robinson, the holder of a doctorate in traditional Chinese medicine, has committed so much of of his time and effort to bringing his dream adventure to fruition, he doesn't see it that way.

"As an outdoorsman, the world is much like my canvas," he says. "To bring a portrait of colour and creativity to reality in a project with so many dimensions requires the relentless pursuit of belief and vision, which are my artistic tools. It has proved to be a time-consuming process because it is so huge in scope, but all things considered I have felt up to the challenge, which has been anything but easy."

Initially unable to secure adequate funding for the independent pilot production, the PANGEA team repositioned itself and, armed with a new direction, secured major network production affiliates, this time for a direct network pitch, which is in progress and awaiting the green light.

"The NAHB Production Group in Washington, DC is currently in negotiation and discussions with most leading networks dealing in the outdoor/adventure genre, most notably National Geographic, Discovery Communications, and Outdoor Life Network, as well as many others," Mr. Robinson says. "Pre-production footage to date has been edited, in part, through the studios of NAHB Productions into a two-minute demo reel 'teaser', which is being used as a component of the network pitch. (to view: see www.synergynmotion.com).

"One thing I have learned, without question, is that dealing with networks and affiliates is an exhaustive process. With attention to detail, and the concerns of many, there are no guarantees in the early stages that structures in place will hold. The process is as challenging as it is rewarding, and as tedious as it is exciting — but then it is my belief that that is the spirit of adventure. By holding steadfast in a project and production this large, my time has been used resourcefully."

In addition to pre-production filming and network meetings and distribution, Mr. Robinson has also been committed to an extreme training programme for the proposed odyssey, as well as furthering his studies at both the Vancouver Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Victoria Film and Motion Picture School.

"This has given me a more in-depth understanding of how to further enhance my skills and abilities in front of and behind the camera," he says. "For me, the uncertainties and fears of holding to a seemingly impossible dream, not only in the questionably sane confines of my mind, but also before my country, its people, and all those whom I love and respect dearly, has been a very humbling and cherished experience."

The first leg of the proposed expedition will find Mr. Robinson kite surfing from Canada to the US, launching from Mile Zero in British Columbia and traversing the Strait of Juan De Fuca to Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state, US, during which he will have two Canadian Coast Guard boats as support.

He then plans to bicycle to the Oregon-Washington border, where he will kite landboard and kite surf along 400 miles of the Oregon coast to California. There he will horseback on the Pacific Crest Trail from Mount Shasta through the Sierra Nevadas and high Sierras to the Mexican border, bicycle to the tip of Baha, Mexico, kite pontoon-kayak across the Sea of Cortez to mainland Mexico, and then bicyle to Panama. Accompanying him will be his production partners, cinematographers and sound technicians. Holding to the green theme of the expedition, the production team will travel in a vehicle capable of running on biodiesel fuel, vegetable oil or optional gas.

"By captivating networks and sponsors with our vision, hard work, and long-standing commitment to the project, we are very fortunate and excited finally to be in such an epic position regarding the projected launch of the Synergy n Motion 'PANGEA — World Without Borders' global expedition production, and heart of the project," Mr. Robinson says. "As they say on Broadway, 'the show must go on'."
