Blaine still living in bully Greg's shadow

Bermudian Blaine continued to hide in the shadow of town bully Greg on this week's episode of Kid Nation.

The CBS reality series, which airs on Wednesday nights, follows 40 kids aged eight to 15 who were dropped in an abandoned New Mexico town.

The show chronicles the 40 days they spent 'roughing it' while they tried to create a sharing and caring society.

Two weeks ago it premiered to much fanfare after months of hype and controversy.

First it came under fire for possibly skirting child-labor laws by subjecting the young cast to 14-hour shooting days. Then news leaked that four children accidentally drank bleach and one girl received burns to her face while cooking with hot grease.

"Where was the adult supervision?" pundits screamed.

And then there was the waiver parents signed, which essentially said the price of reality show fame was your kid's life. It absolved the network of any legal blame should the participants die, get sick, injured or need therapy after their stay in Bonanza City.

So far, the show has lacked the fireworks of the promotional blitz — but it succeeds in being light entertainment that is fun for the family.

Fifteen-year-old Blaine Wise is one of the contestants. His mother Diana Wise (nee Sims) is Bermudian, and although Blaine has grown up in Florida he spends his summers on the Island.

This week the town dealt with law and order issues, with a curfew being established for the first time.

They also learned the importance of a clean and orderly kitchen after the cooks refused to clean dishes and served breakfast in a communal pot instead.

Unfortunately for Bermuda, Blaine continues to be dwarfed by his friend Greg, also known as the town jerk.

Greg lords his size and strength over the other contestants — some of whom are seven years younger than him and believes he should be applauded and awarded a $20,000 gold star for lifting heavy things.

Every episode a gold star is awarded to the kid who goes above and beyond the call of duty and inspires others.

Greg, who has pushed people, cursed at nine-year-olds and covered people's room in graffiti, mistakenly believes that because he can run faster than others and carry out the trash he fits into the gold star category.

The real shame is that Blaine often shows glimpses of being a cool guy.

He's pulled Greg away when he is yelling at young kids and he saved the day for the Blue team during a challenge, ensuring that they don't get stuck with the awful job of cleaning the outhouses.

It is also worth noting that he is never the one yelling at young kids, or pushing them, and that generally he pulls his weight when it comes to chores.

But if Blaine is ever going to win a gold star, he is going to have to crawl out from Greg's shadow and show people who he is.

Next week the town tackles religious difference. The show airs at 9 p.m. local time on CBS.
