Chewstick celebrates its fifth anniversary

Bermuda's legendary open-mic jam session — Chewstick — will be holding a special jam session in celebration of its Fifth Anniversary on Sunday night.

Chewstick organiser Gavin Smith said that if you are looking for live local entertainment, you simply must seek out the Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge at Bootsie's Comedy Club, 123 Front Street next to Docksider's.

"It is a part poetry night, part Hip-Hop Freestyle, part old school Jazz or Reggae jook joint," said Mr. Smith.

"This eclectic event has been taking place every two weeks, and more including weekly summer schedule, for the past five years.

"For those of you who don't know about this truly one-of-a-kind event, you have really been missing out on one of the most entertaining nights to be had in Bermuda.

"Picture a collection of people of all ages, all stereotypes and all colours coming together and sharing their most personal thoughts, gifts, and talents backed by a full band and in front of an audience that is both welcoming and forgiving."

Over the last five years, Chewstick has managed to carve out a niche as the artists' watering hole.

"It is also the destination of choice for those wanting a little bit more than cover-bands, piped in DJ music, or choreographed routines," he said.

"Chewstick is improv at its finest, with acts signing up to perform minutes before they do, with people they may have never met.

"It is a great opportunity for the aspiring artist and seasoned professional to both get their chops up, and perform the art they want to perform, which has resulted in performances ranging from classical dance to soul-stirring reggae and much more!"

In its five-year history, Chewstick has moved around to different venues, and now resides at Bootsie's Comedy Club on Front Street.

"It takes place every other Sunday night from 8 p.m. until 12 a.m.," he added.

For the fifth anniversary celebrations they will be extending their hours to go from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., closing the stage down at 12 a.m. to open up the dance floor to boogie down to the sounds of The Dirkistan Freedom Fighters, Olybhosh and DJ Kid Fresh."

All are encouraged to come and participate, it promises to be an electric night full of surprises and some of the best performances to be seen this holiday season.

Tickets $15, are available at the door.
