Drawn to Spittal Pond
He's back! After a two-year gap since his last solo show, Grenada-born artist Frank Dublin unveils his newest collection of approximately 24 paintings in the Bermuda Society of Arts' Edinburgh Gallery this evening.
The show has no theme, but all of the work was done at various locations around Bermuda, and the majority are landscapes.
"At least four were done at Spittal Pond because it is one beauty spot on the Island which I feel has been neglected by artists," he says.
Mr. Dublin's chosen media are oils and pastels, the latter being a medium he particularly enjoys for the durability of its colours.
"Pastels don't fade, they retain their brilliance throughout the years," he says. "In fact, the pastels of artists like DaVinci and Dégas look just as though they were painted yesterday."
A student of professional artist Sharon Wilson, Mr. Dublin happily notes that pastel artists are generally receiving more recognition in the community as the popularity of the medium grows because they are discovering the best ways to experiment with it.
Unlike some artists, who admit to being very nervous about the public reaction to their solo shows, Mr. Dublin is positively upbeat.
"Any time I have a solo exhibition I am always excited," he says. "I always believe that the success of a show is not dependent on the amount of work you have sold but its quality, and how well the public is able to accept it. I always keep an open mind."
Mr. Dublin has been actively painting since 1993, and is a regular group exhibitor at the Bermuda Society of Arts and the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard. He has attended many art classes at the Bermuda College (where he gained his Diploma), as well as workshops with local artists. His work has twice been included in a Bermuda National Gallery Biennial, and he is also a winner of multiple awards in Masterworks Foundation Festivals in the Park/Gardens. In 1997 he was congratulated by the House of Assembly for his participation in the third Caribbean and Central American Biennial exhibition.
Mr. Dublin's current exhibition continues through May 14. For further information see the Bermuda Calendar.
