Fashion website 'to fill void in the market'
Two fashion-forward Bermudians promise to "fill a void in the market" by launching a new online magazine that's not just about pretty dresses.
Partners Shiona Turini and Mia Page Chambray have created a website that will feature articles on fashion, beauty, shopping, entertainment, travel, culture and relationships, but plan to eventually touch on more serious topics as well.
"We both felt that there was nothing young people could relate to in Bermuda. I hope avenues like this will encourage young people to look at the issues because we are also going to cover somethings like politics," said Ms Turini.
"This is our country, we should have a say and encourage the youth and others like us to get involved. It's not just going to be about pretty dresses," she told The Royal Gazette.
Partner Ms Chambray agreed, adding: "Its going to be a website that's stylish but has something to say for itself, encourages people to think, not just something visual."
Ms Turini, the owner of local fashion company StyleBermuda, is currently an Accessories Market Editor at W Magazine in New York, which means she works regularly with industry insiders to find the best shoes, belts and bags on the market.
She said: "I reached out to Mia Chambray to work with me on this project and it's really exciting working with her. She has a great eye for fashion, is really passionate about it, and we learn a lot from each other."
Admittedly, neither of the fashionistas are particularly 'computer savvy', but they have been working hard with New York-based company Design Attic over the past few months to provide viewers with a quality online magazine.
Ms Turini believes this website will "fill a void in the market" seeing that many locals are interested in reading about fashion and entertainment, but have very few options other than international magazines.
She said: "But, what about the models and designers and fabulous fashionable Bermudians? Unfortunately, those sites do not feature shoots on our Island, using our models, and profiling our people."
As a Bermudian, Ms Turini understands how challenging it was to get her high-heel-wearing foot in the door, and as a result remains a strong believer in bringing her experiences and connections back to Bermuda.
She explained: "It's extremely important for us to showcase local talent, but also to expose Bermudians to the international fashion and entertainment industry.
"Since I've been working in fashion for about five years now, I've met tons of people who have offered to write and participate with the website.
"It's exciting to know that stylebermuda.com will be able to give Bermudians an up close and personal, direct look in these industries."
In addition to weekly columns, daily blogs and the occassional celebrity interview, the online magazine will also profile fashionable Bermudians, those people with their own unique sense of style.
Ms Turini said: "Thats the thing about fashion; we are not saying that you have to wear this and you have to shop here; its about finding your own style and running with it.
"Maybe they don't want to wear a flowy dress, maybe they just want to throw on their sneakers and a pair of track pants and call it a day, but they are comfortable and they look cute as well.
"I think there are going to be tons of girls that relate more to that than they would to me. "
Ms Chambray added: "A designer doesn't make the outfit, you could be dressed head to toe in designer and still look bad or you could have a $30 dress on and look phenomenal. I think its about your own personal sense of self, who you are and what you are comfortable in and what you exude."
The website will be updated every week and will therefore be one step ahead of local print magazines; Ms Chambray said: "I think the sky is the limit as far as what this website can achieve.
"When something is online there's always the availability to update, put new things online, expand, bring on different advertisers and do more things than you could do with a static magazine. With an online magazine I think there are endless possibilities," she said.
Ms Turini added: "If something interesting happens today we can put it up on the website tomorrow, but with a magazine it would take three months (to go to print)."
Seeing that Ms Chambray is working out of Bermuda and Ms Turini operates out of New York, they will be able to report on events happening on the Island as well as on a global scale, events like New York's Fashion week. Though it may seem challenging to operate the website from two different countries, they admitted that the partnership has thus far been "seemless".
The new online magazine, www.stylebermuda.com, will also give viewers plenty of incentive to go back again, explained Ms Turini.
"Not to be biased, but its going to be an amazing site, if I didn't create it I am going to sit there and wish I had created it," she said with a laugh. "They should just check it out, if they like it they like it and they can come back and check out the fabulous prizes we have every week."
