Garden club names scholarship winners

Winners: The recipients of the Garden Club of Bermuda'sScholarship Awards for 2007-8. Susanna Merlot is studying Environmental Studies at the University ofToronto. Vanessa James is at the University of EastAnglia pursuing a B.Sc in Environmental Science. Tristan Locher, is studying landscape architecture at the University ofBritish Columbia. David Chapman is at the Royal HollowayUniversity of London pursuing a M.Sc in Environmental Assessment and Analysis. ZoeyRoberts is at the University of Kent, Durrell Institute of Conservation Ecology,studying for a M.Sc. in Conservation Biology. Sam Fraser-Smith is pursuing a M.Sc. in Plant Protectionn at the University of Queensland,Australia and Keidoe Arorash is at the University ofWaikato in New Zealand.

Students with a love of horticulture have benefited from scholarships worth $41,000 in total from the Garden Club of Bermuda this year.

The club has been giving out awards for Islanders studying horticultural subjects since 1957.

Janet Owner, scholarship committee chairman, said: "The Garden Club wishes every success to this year's recipients and looks forward to having them use the skills they have learned in the preservation and enhancement of Bermuda's open spaces."

This year's recipients were: Michael Lindo (studying science at Lake City Community College, Florida); Susanna Merlot (environmental sciences, University of Toronto); Vanessa James (environmental science, University of East Anglia); Tristan Locher (landscape architecture, University of British Columbia); David Chapman (environmental assessment and analysis, Royal Holloway University of London); Zoey Roberts (conservation biology, University of Kent); Sam Fraser-Smith (plant protection, University of Queensland, Australia) and Keidoe Arorash (conservation and resource management, University of Waikato, New Zealand).
