Golfers playing in memory of Lindo's founders Harry and Marion Lindo have raised over $3,000 for the cancer charity PALS.

Earlier this month a cheque for $3,852 was presented to the charity by the Lindo's Group of Companies. The money was raised at Lindo's annual Harion Golf Tournament.

The tournament, played in memory of Harry and Marion, who passed away in 1993 and 2006 respectively, attracted 76 players this year.

According to a press release: "The event started 18 years ago when Harry Lindo asked his grandsons to join him in a round of golf on Boxing Day. Thus began a family tradition of golf each year on this day until 1998 when the family decided to formalise the event through the creation of an annual tournament. In 2002, the family decided to give the event even more meaning by donating all proceeds to PALS."

Zach Moniz, manager for Lindo's and Harry and Marion's grandson, is responsible for coordinating the golf tournament.

"The golf tournament gives my family the opportunity to pay tribute to my grandparents and recognise the PALS organisation, which was a tremendous support to us during my grandfather's and grandmother's illnesses with cancer," he said.

"I would like to thank all of the participants for supporting this worthwhile cause and I look forward to another exciting tournament next year."

PALS president and CEO Ann Smith Gordon welcomed the donation.

"We would like to thank Lindo's for selecting PALS as their charity," she said.

"I'd also like to thank the many participants of the golf tournament without whom this donation would not be possible. Cancer is a devastating illness and one which impacts families throughout Bermuda. This donation will assist our care givers in providing the best possible care and treatment environment for our patients."

The 2006 tournament was played on December 26 at Belmont Hills Golf Course.

PALS, formerly known as Patients Assistance League and Service, was founded in 1980 to provide services to cancer patients in their homes, rather than in a hospital environment. There is no charge for the services of PALS nurses, or for the use of medical equipment and medical supplies. These services are available to all cancer patients who need them.
