Larrita in Apollo contest

Bermuda's own Larrita Adderley won Amateur Night at the Apollo last Wednesday and was planning to do it again tonight.

The Bermuda Idol 2007 winner spoke to The Royal Gazette, as she strolled from 35th Street to 39th Street, in Manhattan.

This was not the singer's first time at Harlem's Apollo Theatre, but it was her first win there. So was she surprised by her changing tides, she replied: "Not really, because it is my third time and I felt confident and comfortable."

Miss Adderley sang one of Shirley Bassey's songs, "I Have Nothing," during her winning performance.

She was in the US because of an award she won at City Hall, and took the opportunity of going to the Apollo.

"The last time I went there was 2006, so I went there and got the feel for it and then that was it," she said.

"Last Wednesday when I got there for the rehearsals, I made sure that they got my music down and everything, and I sang."

Asked whether she had heard from any A&R people, she replied: "So far, nothing yet.

"But the lady that I am working with at the Apollo is named Jane Harley, she told me that she is the Apollo legend and I believe her father is Hal Jackson's (Talented teen Competition). So I am with her right now. She has something for me in June."

Tonight she says that she has to do a repeat performance.

"I have to sing the same song."

Regarding whether there was the same or a new audience, she said: "I'm not sure who comes, because I always come in the back way."

When this paper asked her what it was like to just be doing her thing outside of Bermuda, she said: "Off the hook! Unbelievable! I've been to New York, Jersey and Philadelphia and now back to New York."

The voting is by text messages, explained the young songstress.

"Everybody gets up and sings and the people who do not get booed off or the siren going off are the final people. They then call out each one and the first person or the winner gets to stand aside and the second, third and fourth place are chosen by a text vote. So, I'll be with the same people tomorrow night."

If she wins again, she will come back to the Apollo Theatre in September.
