New kids on the block
Six young artists, some of whom are neophyte exhibitors, have joined forces to present a multi-media exhibition of their work in the Onions Gallery of the Bermuda Society of Arts, City Hall, for which the opening reception is this evening.
The title of the show, 'Diversity of Friends', not only reflects the group's friendship but also their work, which includes painting and photography.
The six participants are Bermudians Joyce Duarte (watercolours), Zeudi Hinds, Ricardo Cardoso and Andora Rogers (photographers), Arjah Stirling (oils), and British-Mauritian painter and conduit for the show Alice Coutet (Cedenio).
Joyce Duarte is new to the art world. Her medium is watercolours, and her paintings balance a darker, heavier acrylic style with lighter, brighter colours. She enjoys photography, and uses her pictures of Bermuda as inspiration. She sums up painting as "an enjoyable expression" and says her paintings reflect her feelings. "I not only paint what I see, I paint what I feel."
Zeudi Hinds has loved photography for as long as she can remember, but it wasn't until she took a course in photo journalism that she really became hooked on the art. Her photographic career began in earnest when a good friend invited her to be a bridesmaid. Instead, Miss Hinds chose to be a photographer - and never looked back. By combining photojournalistic, traditional and fine art styles of wedding photography with advanced digital technology, she endeavours to make each photograph a work of art.
Although her passion is wedding photography, Miss Hinds also dabbles in travel photography and traditional and non-traditional portraiture. In the future she hopes to experiment with different styles and techniques, and explore different types of photography.
Ricardo Cardoso's interest in photography began with a desire to capture Bermuda's natural beauty. Six years later, he continues to experiment with his preference for digital photography, while continuing to develop his talent and skills.
Largely self-taught, Mr. Cardoso acknowledges the influence of Bermudian professional photographers Scott Stallard and Roland Skinner. Landscapes are a particular interest, and his work was recently included in an exhibition at the Musés de L'Eysée in Switzerland. For further information visit website http://ricardocardoso.ifp3.com
Arjah Stirling is a young, budding artist whose chosen medium is oils. Art classes at Saltus Grammar School have enhanced her painting skills. Her strongest style is drawing animé characters, and credits cousin Chelsea for introducing her to the art form. "I have loved animé since I was six or seven years old, but realised my drawing potential when I was 12, and has grown on me a lot," she says.
Andora Rogers is a budding photographer who first became interested in the medium many years ago but had little time to pursue it. Over the past two years she has renewed her interest in photography, and prefers macro photography, as well as landscapes and portraiture. Bermuda is her main source of her inspiration, and she enjoys taking long drives to capture the perfect expressions of the Island.
Alice Coutet (Cedenio)'s work often exaggerates Nature's colours, magnifying their exquisiteness and commanding attention. The spectacular array of her work includes traditional Bermuda Cottages, precisely painted portraits, and vibrantly coloured abstracts, reflecting her belief that 'you can never run out of things to paint in Bermuda'. Ms Coutet has numerous artistic credits, and has won both the People's Choice and Quick Art awards at the 2006 Bank of Butterfield Artfest. "Every painting is a part of me," she says.
