ON THE ART SCENE
All that Jazz at Daylesford
The popular Saltus Jazz Band is teaming up with professional musicians, Tony Bari and Friends, to present a major concert, emceed by Derrick 'CJ' Simons, at Daylesford Theatre on April 16 and 17. Because the current, 14-strong group of student musicians are of a particularly high standard, they are able to perform more challenging music, according to their Saltus Grammar School teacher, Lisa Maule, and playing with professional musicians for a big band sound will raise their game even further. The Saltus Jazz Band comprises saxophones, trumpets, trombones, bass guitar and keyboards, while the Toni Bari and Friends line-up will include Ronnie Lopes (drums), Stan Gilbert (bass), Max Maybury (saxophone) and Graham Maule (trombone).
Vocalist Sheila Smith will also perform.
The programme's collective repertoire will span the decades in jazz, funk, Latin, R&B and classic rock, and showtime is 7.30 p.m. Tickets ($50) are available now from Saltus Grammar School, the Music Box, Daisy & Mac, and Robertson's Drug Store. "Don't miss it" is the word from those in the know.
From Bach to the Beatles
Bermuda School of Music faculty Oliver Grant (piano), Lisa Hollis (violin) and Steve Crawford (guitar) will give a concert on April 19 at Christ Church, Warwick featuring the music of Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy and Liszt, as well as John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
The concert will begin at 8 p.m., and tickets ($25) are available from the Bermuda School of Music on Berkeley Road, or at the door before the concert. Orders can also be phoned to 234-5933, 295-5100 ext. 206 or 236-1882 with pick-up at the door.
Gimme the Keys!
Mark your calendars now for May 16 and 17 when zany musical comedy entertainer Jimmy Keys again returns to the Island to give two benefit performances in aid of the new Therapeutic Riding Programme at WindReach. Just as he did last year, when over 600 people supported the event, the ever-popular artist is expected to perform to sell-out audiences this time around, so early bookings are strongly advised.
The comedy night will take place at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, and the ticket price of $160 per person includes dinner and the show. Bookings can be made at the WindReach stable office (tel. 238-7433) or by e-mailing brd@ibl.bm
