Top students vie for prestigious scholarships

More than $700,000 in scholarships are again being made available from the Bank of Bermuda. The Bank of Bermuda Foundation awards seven scholarships a year, distributing a total of $717,000, to Bermudian students who achieve academic excellence, demonstrate a strong community focus, and are involved in extra-curricular activities.

Foundation director and secretary David Lang said: "The Bank of Bermuda Foundation Scholarship programme is about supporting and encouraging the youth of Bermuda in their goal to further their education.

"In offering these scholarships, we can provide students with the financial support they need to take advantage of the many wonderful opportunities that come with attending college or university. We believe that by educating the youth of today we can help develop a great community of leaders for tomorrow."

Bank of Bermuda Foundation offers the following scholarships:

¦ Sir John W. Cox University Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies, which is a scholarship for a Bermudian student who is pursuing postgraduate studies on a full-time basis and is worth $30,000 per annum for up to four years.

¦ Sir Henry Tucker Scholarship. This is a scholarship for students going abroad for undergraduate studies and is worth $30,000 a year for up to four years.

¦ Sir Henry Tucker Grants. There are three grants awarded each year for $8,000 a year for up to four years.

¦ Eldon H. Trimingham (pictured) Master of Business Administration Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a graduate student who is pursuing a MBA degree on a full-time basis at a university outside Bermuda. It provides $30,000 a year over a period not exceeding two years.

¦ Joseph C.H. Johnson Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a financially needy student with potential, who has been nominated by their School Principal. It provides $30,000 a year for up to four years for a student going to Bermuda College or abroad to study.

¦ Financial Services Scholarship. This scholarship is for students going into their third year of studies in a banking related field of study. The scholarship provides $40,000 over two years and scholarship recipients are required to render services to the Bank of Bermuda upon return to the Island.

¦ President's Award. These awards are given to students who are in, or have just completed, their final year of Bermuda secondary school or Bermuda College. The scholarship is made up of one Premier award and five runner-up awards. The Premier award is worth $15,000 a year and the runner-up awards are worth $10,000 each a year. These scholarships are awarded for one academic year.

¦ Information Technology Scholarships. This scholarship is for Bermudian students who are pursuing undergraduate information technology related studies. Two scholarships are awarded each year, worth $12,000 a year for up to four years.

To be considered for the awards, applications must be submitted no later than 4.30 p.m., March 31.
