WRC fundraiser to feature 28 female Bermuda artists
A year in the planning, organisers and volunteers are now putting the finishing touches to a major fundraiser for the Women's Resource Centre (WRC). Entitled 'Divart '08', the May 3 event at the Elliot Gallery in Devonshire will feature an auction of original art donated by 28 female Bermuda artists, including paintings, monotype and archival prints, portraits, sculpture, jewellery and more. Participating artists include the well-known and not-so-well-known. Among them are Rhona Emmerson, Heather Macdonald, Lynn Morrell, Betsy Mulderig, Sheilagh Head, Heather Nova, Maria Evers Smith, Amanda Temple, Sharon Wilson, Emma Dounouk, Betty Ann Trott and Kathy Zuill. Many of the artists will be present as the auction takes place.
"There will be something for everyone," WRC executive director and art donor Kathy Harriott says, referring to the anticipated range of prices the art will fetch.
Kate Ross will be the auctioneer, whom Ms Harriott says "is fantastic, and will be great".
In addition, there will be a silent auction of some very different and imaginative items, including a ballroom dancing session and dinner for four; a private wine-tasting event for 15 at the Aquarium led by wine master Michael Robinson; a round of golf for four, including carts, at Belmont Hills; an eco tour of Harrington Sound with lunch in a private home; portrait photography, and a horseback trail ride for two with gourmet picnic basket. "The items are priceless things you couldn't actually buy if you went to a shop, which makes them more appealing and special, " Ms Harriott notes. There will also be raffles and a door prize, and free auction paddles for bidders.
Dress is 'Inner Artist' – a term deliberately left open to individual interpretation and creativity.
Guests will be greeted with a glass of champagne on arrival, with wine and soft drinks also on tap. Cocktail fare will be prepared by The Little Venice Group, while Honor Brady, Chelsea Mayeaux, Luisa Olander and Emily Ross will provide the music. Sponsor of the registered charity's first-ever art auction is Dawn Zuill of Bermuda Executive Services. Organisers are naturally excited about 'Divart', and urge everyone to attend what they assure will be a festive evening of fun for all, while at the same time supporting a very worthy cause.
Tickets are just $50 per person, and can be purchased at the Music Box and All Wrapped Up in Hamilton, and at The Island Shop in St. George's.
The Women's Resource Centre is a registered charity dedicated to empowering women. It primarily works with victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence, but will also help women with other issues.
