Demanding safety–in the streets, home and workplace
There is no doubt that Bermuda is a very different place than it was ten, 20 or even 30 years ago. Personal security and safety have increasingly become an issue, especially for women.
To bring awareness to the safety and security issues women face, whether at home or on the streets, the Bermuda Security Group and the Women's Resource Centre will be organising their third annual Take Back the Night awareness march, to take place on Friday.
"The whole point, it's a symbolic walk to reclaim women's space to demand safety in the streets, home and the workplace," explained Kathy Harriott, executive director of the Women's Resource Centre.
The event is held internationally at various times throughout the year. The very first was organised in Italy 31 years ago, in response to, "astronomical reports of rape on women", Ms. Harriott said.
In the past, unfortunately, they have not seen huge turnouts, but this year, Ms Harriott hopes it will be a, "big, big event".
The walk will begin at 7 p.m. from Albuoy's Point and the first 30 walkers will receive free T-shirts. Walkers will then march to Crow Lane and back. Ms Harriott expects that it will take most walkers 45 minutes to an hour to complete the walk.
Before walkers head out, Dr. Carol Ferris will share a few encouraging words with those in attendance. Several years ago, Dr. Ferris, who focuses on holistic health in her medical practice, completed the Gobi Desert Race to raise funds for the Women's Resource Centre.
Ms Harriott hopes even if people cannot manage the walk, they attend and show support to those who are walking.
"We invite everyone to come and support at least the ideology of peace in the community."
While participation is free, donations are greatly appreciated and groups are more than welcome.
