Riveting scenes of exiled author's return to Chile
Peter Raymont follows up his Emmy-winning 'Shake Hands With the Devil' with another documentary of an uneasy homecoming — the return of exiled author Ariel Dorfman to Chile after 30 years.
This personal and political documentary follows celebrated author of "Death and the Maiden", on his emotionally charged return visit to Chile, having left after dictator Augusto Pinochet came to power.
The film boasts shocking archival footage and heartbreaking contemporary sequences, which explore the impact of Pinochet's rule and death on Dorfman and others.
The film is extremely informative and shows how Pinochet came to power and what happened as a result.
It covers not only Mr. Dorfman's life outside Chile — moving from country to country trying to raise awareness about what was happening within his home — but also the lives of those he left behind.
He visits with a group of women who played a pivotal role in bringing to light the plight of the disappeared — people who simply vanished under the dictator's rule. One particular scene is riveting, when Mr. Dorfman visits a former intelligence office and is shown thousands of interwoven wires, each tiny wire representing 300 people who Pinochet's officers wire tapped during his rule.
He also speaks with people who are pro-Pinochet.
However, it is not just a historical documentary, it is based on Mr. Dorfman's life. His family has a history of political exile and Mr. Dorfman was exiled three times before he turned 40. At times it can be a tad too sentimental and it is hard to say if Mr. Dorfman is making himself appear to be more important in the socialist Allende's government (which was overthrown in the September 11, 1973 military coup) than he actually was.
However, those unkind thoughts were quickly brushed aside, as it was plain to see his exile has left a permanent mark and shaped his literary career.
Definitely a worthwhile watch and the best of the three films I have reviewed. I would recommend it to everyone.
A Promise to the Dead: The Exile Journey of Ariel Dorfman is being screened as a special presentation and fundraiser for BIFF and Amnesty International Bermuda. It will be screened one time only tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Liberty Theatre and tickets are $50.
