More than 100 disabled children and adults came together for a Christmas party at the weekend.

The event, at Windreach Recreational Village, saw partygoers treated to food, festive music and an appearance by Santa Claus.

The party is now in its 33rd year. It was organised up until last year by Mark Selley.

Although Pembroke Rotary Club put the arrangements in place this year, Mr. Selley continued his annual tradition of playing Santa. The children flocked out onto the balcony of the venue to watch with delight as he arrived in a carriage pulled by two white horses – accompanied by the tune 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town' played by a bagpiper.

Mr. Selley was inspired to organise the first party 33 years ago after watching the disappointment of a group of disabled youngsters who missed out on a scramble for candy thrown out by Santa Claus at the Flagpole on Front Street.

Such was the excitement generated by his appearance as Santa, he was mobbed by the children – with one over enthusiastic youngster almost pulling his beard off.

"Perhaps I need a bodyguard next year," he joked. "It was good fun, it's always good fun and I look forward to the next one."

He thanked all the event sponsors, in particular the Robin Hobin restaurant for contributing 200 pizzas.

Sasha Castle, International Service Director of Pembroke Rotary Club said: "We wanted everyone in our special needs community to come out and enjoy themselves. "They always enjoy the opportunity to socialise and get out there and see Santa up close and join something that brings a sense of fellowship.

"We wanted to continue to bring that joy to each of those who came, and allow them to take a brief moment out from the realty of whatever it is they're experiencing."
