Todd spreads out in the 'Apple'

Trevor Todd's Aboriginal inspired works will be on show in New York from Sunday.

A relatively new artist is riding a "cosmic wave" straight to a debut show in the Big Apple this weekend.

Trevor Todd's Aboriginal-inspired works will open on Sunday in the Renate Albertsen Marton Space in The Village [AT] Gureje Gallery, which is located at 884-886 Pacific Street, Brooklyn, New York.

Mr. Todd, who is excited about the opportunity, spoke to The Royal Gazette about how the show came about and what he hopes to achieve while in New York.

The artist said that while touring New York with his portfolio in tow, several people had suggested he approach The Village [AT] Gureje.

"So I went to see them and we stayed in contact," he said. "They told me that I needed to send some portfolio pictures, so that they could put it towards the board, who would decide who goes in this particular show.

"Then about a month ago, they contacted me and said that I had been accepted into the show."

Mr. Todd flew out last week and to prepare he took all of his work off the stretchers, which he will replace when there.

"The show has to be hung on the 16th and the reason that I am leaving early is to make sure that I can get stretchers and everything that I will need to put the work on display," he said.

All of the work that he has taken for this exhibition is from his first solo show in which he showed his Aboriginal collection. That exhibition took place at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art in the fall of 2006.

Of the upcoming joint show in New York, Mr. Todd said: "It is (organised) from the most well known to the least known, and I guess that I am the least known, which would allow me to do other things down the road if they like it and want to see more of it.

"That is what I would love to see happen. It will give me some exposure."

The show runs until June 30.

"I guess I am a bit nervous because I am in an entirely different realm, which would allow me to sit back and observe," Mr. Todd said.

"This is also not where I come from, but you know, art is art in the world. But now we are talking about an entirely different audience, as well, one which is broader. I am not expecting anything in particular; I am just seeing where it will go.

"It is almost like I am having the first show all over again — I am in that space now.

"Throughout my short career, this is how things have happened and it is what I call a cosmic wave. It's like when you are introduced to one person and then another, so I am feeling pretty good about it all at this time.

"Everything I do is a learning process and whatever I get from this show, I will carry on to whatever else that I do."

The opening reception is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
