HEDGE CUTTING IS NECESSARY GVT ENV Hedge cutting is necessary Severe hedge cutting alongside Bermuda's roads is necessary for the safety of all motorists.
Works and Engineering Minister C. V (Jim) Woolridge said crews had to cut hedges and trees well back in the interests of visibility and access.
He was speaking after fears were raised over the extent of the husbandry along some parts of Middle Road.
National Trust director Amanda Outerbridge said they had received calls from members, who were concerned over how much of the vegetation was being cut.
Mr. Woolridge said he shared the concerns but said it was important to trim back, especially on narrow roads that increasingly carry larger vehicles, to improve the view and space.
In addition, he said with the frequent rain showers the trees and shrubs would grow back quickly.
And although Works and Engineering, in conjunction with the Parks Department, were doing their best to keep roads clear, the Minister said they still needed the cooperation of homeowners to complete the work.
He called upon residents to take responsibility for the pruning of their own gardens, many of which over-hung roads and were close to electricity cables.
They didn't want to enact legislation to force people to comply and hoped that citizens would take note to cut their own hedges.
