That's the view of the Community and Cultural Affairs Minister the Hon.

Leonard Gibbons.

Mr. Gibbons attended the weekend opening ceremony of the travelling exhibition, Carib Art.

He said he had been immensely impressed with the standard of Bermudian entries.

"It makes you proud to be a Bermudian. Art is a medium through which people can understand each other,'' he said.

Work by some 137 artists from 32 Caribbean countries, including Bermuda, have gone on display.

The Bermudian painters are Sharon Wilson, Otto Trott, Jill Raine, Mike Swan and Vaughan Evans.

With Mr. Gibbons in Curacao is Cultural Affairs Officer Miss Ruth Thomas.

The exhibition -- the first of its kind -- will move around the Caribbean for the next three years.

Mr. Gibbons said he hoped the exhibition, which includes sculptures as well as paintings, would eventually come to Bermuda.
