Barbecue safety tips
Fire Service and submitted by its Chief Fire Officer, Mr. R.A. Rawlins.
Summer is traditionally barbecue time for many local residents. In the interests of personal safety we recommend the following tips: Before use, read the safety instructions supplied with the grill, especially gas grills.
After any storage period, and before the first use of the season, gas grills should be cleaned and tested to ensure that all the jets are functioning properly.
To check for gas leaks at the cylinder valve and hose connection, brush with soapy water, then look for bubbles caused by escaping gas.
Always ensure the ignition source is in position and lit before turning on the gas supply to the burner.
Never place the grill in a draft or cook indoors. All grills should be set up outdoors and a safe distance from the house.
Never use a liquid fire starter to freshen a fire and never use gasoline or other flammable liquids near the barbecue.
Always ensure matches and flammable charcoal starters are stored out of the reach of children.
When you have finished cooking soak the coals with water to be sure they are properly extinguished, especially when on a beach.
Remember that hot barbecues and children's horse play don't mix. Always ensure proper supervision whenever a barbecue is in use.
Don't use loose fitting clothing when cooking on the barbecue. Remember if your clothing catches fire stop, drop and roll to smother the flames. Do not run -- running will only fan the flames.
