Be prepared for an evening of `breath-taking' music-making
It's a case of double pleasure tonight at City Hall theatre, when Hungarian twins Peter and Zoltan Katona will beguile the first of two Bermuda Festival audiences with the beauty of their classical guitar playing.
The brothers, who began their musical studies at the age of ten, graduated with distinction from Britain's prestigious Royal Academy of Music in 1997.
Prior to that they had studied in Budapest and Germany. Along the way they garnered three top prizes in international competitions.
Critics have described their music-making as "breath-taking'', and waxed lyrical about the "seemingly telepathic empathy'' which allows them to "interpret subtleties of phrasing and tempo in perfect synchronisation''.
In 1998 the brothers won a top prize in the 1998 Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York, and in March last year made their Carnegie Hall debut.
In addition to their many public performances, these extremely popular artists have broadcast throughout the United Kingdom and Europe, and are also recording artists. In addition, they gave the world premiere of a new work by Judith Bingham which was especially commissioned for them.
Described by one critic as being able to produce a performance "where art transcends artifice (sic)'', the Katona Twins are certain to provide a memorable evening for lovers of classical guitar music.
Tonight's programme will include three Scarlatti sonatas; Albe mniz' "Suite Iberio, and Aragon; Rodrigo's Tonadilla; Sanchez-Gutierrez' "Canonica', and Piazzolla's "Tango Suite.'' The programme for their final performance tomorrow evening will consist of an eclectic choice of music from several periods. This includes Handel's "Suite No. 3 in A minor'' and other works; Leo Brouwer's "Per suonare a due''; Bartok's "Romanian Folk Dances''; and Piazzolla's "Le Grand Tango.'' Both performances begin at 8 p.m. For ticket information visit the Bermuda Festival box office next to the ferry terminal building on Front Street between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., or 292-8572.
