about two and a half years. She recently retired and has returned to England.

Phoenix Stores marketing manager, Pauline Girling, remarked about Ms. Atkin: "Kay's strength as Phoenix Stores human resource manager was her ability to make employees feel an integral part of the organisation and communication was the heart of the process.

"Her thorough understanding of the resources needed in human resources, coupled with our president's clear vision and willingness to commit, continues to strengthen the efficiency, productivity, morale and harmony at Phoenix Stores.'' Ms. Atkin has worked in human resources for about 20 years. "It is a wonderful field due to the variety of work. It has everything in it. There are many intricate components when you are involved with people,'' she said smiling.

We invited her to reflect upon her role in human resources through a question and answer interview.

What three components of your job have you enjoyed the most? 1. "Working with an interesting group of people. With this job it has covered a broad range of departments from retail sales to warehouse.

2. "The challenges of developing training and developmental programmes.

3. "The public relations elements of the job when dealing with applicants. If I am involved in the selection process it is most gratifying to get the right person and to hear their pleasure at being offered the job.'' How would you describe the management style of the Phoenix Stores? A fairly flat structure. The management is very involved with the work. For example, in the Phoenix Stores George Grundmuller, president and ceo, is a hands-on manager. He will pitch in and help anywhere he is needed. He walks and talks the job. And all of the managers work hard. They don't just sit back and look at a clean desk. They show flexibility and consideration toward their staff.'' What qualifications are needed for your job and would you recommend this field of work to others? "I came through the English system and I am a member of the Institute of Personnel and Development. You must sit an examination for the certificate. I hold a Master's Degree in Human Resource Management from Bournemouth University in the south of England.

"Yes, I would recommend this field if you enjoy working with people. I have done it for 20 years and the variety is wonderful. There are many challenges and everyday presents a different challenge.'' What has been the highlight of your career? "Having the opportunity to work in a beautiful place like Bermuda in a totally different culture.'' Do you have regrets about leaving your position? "Yes, I regret leaving the wonderful people. I will terribly miss Claudette Simmons, the payroll supervisor and Debbie Turner, receptionist. They are such lovely people and helped me settle into my job when I was first hired.'' Do you want to share your plans for the future? "When I go home I will be considering other options. I am really too young to retire. I think I would enjoy consulting with various corporations.'' BUSINESS BUC
