Bermuda heritage through the lens
By Nicole Williams Smith After capturing some of the most powerful people on the Island for his celebrated book, "A Date With Destiny'', photographer Tamell Simons has turned his lens on a less publicised subject -- everyday Bermudians.
More than a dozen of Mr. Simons' photographs go on display today at Masterworks on Front Street as part of their Artist Up Front series.
"I wanted to try to tie the exhibition into the Bermuda heritage, from whence we came,'' explained the owner of Native Adventures Tours. "With my tours I'm developing a whole new appreciation for the everyday people of Bermuda and this is my way of celebrating them and giving them some exposure.'' The show is a rare opportunity for the public to view some of the well-known photographer's pictures.
"I generally don't do too many solo exhibitions,'' he confessed. "I hope people come and check it out because it's about them and it's in line with Heritage month. It's something everyone can relate to.'' The entire solo exhibition features only black and white photographs, Mr.
Simons film of preference.
"A lot of the historical images that move me are black and white,'' he explained, "and because the pictures are devoid of colour you tend to be able to focus more easily on the subject in black and white.'' The exhibition will be on display at Masterworks until June 9.
